PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week ending April 21.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jared Triolo * Jr. * 3B * Houston
Triolo hit .583 (7-for-12) in a 3-1 week, which included a 4-1 victory over No. 7 Texas A&M and a series win against Cincinnati, pushing the Cougars into third place in American standings. Triolo had three hits in Games 1 and 3 of the weekend series against the Bearcats, adding four RBIs, three runs scored, four walks, two stolen bases and a double on the week. He got on base in each game and slugged .667.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Jake Agnos * Jr. * LHP * ECU
Agnos earns his third American weekly honor this year after striking out a career-high 14 batters in a career-long 8.2 innings in a 5-1 series opening win against UConn Thursday night. He fanned at least one batter in all nine innings he worked, scattering five hits and a solo home run. His only walk of the day was issued with two outs in the ninth. From the third through the ninth inning, Agnos retired 18 of 19 batters faced including 13-consecutive hitters.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Jeremy Johnson * R-Jr. * OF * Cincinnati
Johnson batted .583 (7-for-12) and registered a hit in each game, turning in three-straight multi-hit showings during a 2-2 week. He went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs in a 15-5 win over Miami (Ohio) Tuesday. He also had 2-for-3 performances in the first two games of the series at Houston. Johnson drew five walks, hit a double and slugged .667 throughout the week.
Jake Washer * R-Jr. * C/DH * ECU
Washer batted .500 (5-for-10) and slugged 1.200 with a pair of home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored during a 4-0 week. He drove in a run in each game, recording multiple hits in two contests. Washer reached base eight times on the week.
Fred Villarreal * Jr. * RHP * Houston
Villarreal earned two saves in three appearances out of the bullpen. In total, he tossed 5.0 shutout innings, striking out five, while scattering two hits and three walks. He pitched a scoreless ninth in a 4-1 win over No. 7 Texas A&M on Tuesday and recorded his conference-leading ninth save of the season on Friday against Cincinnati. Villarreal threw another two shutout frames against the Bearcats Saturday in a series-clinching win.
Kyle Phillips * Sr. * OF * USF
Phillips hit .467 (7-for-15) and turned in two multi-hit performances in four games with nine runs and an RBI. He recorded a .619 on-base percentage and led the team with five walks. Phillips went 3-for-5 in the series opener and scored six runs on Saturday alone, helping the Bulls sweep The Citadel. He was also 3-for-4 on stolen base attempts.
Jack Sigrist * Fr. * DH/OF * Wichita State
Sigrist hit .500, going 5-for-10 with two runs, two RBIs, a walk and stolen base, as the Shockers took two of three against UCF over the weekend. He hit in each game, with a career-best 3-for-4 showing in Game 2. Sigrist posted a .500 on-base and slugging percentage in the series.
