USF, UCF, Tulane Chosen For NCAA Men's Tennis Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  USF, UCF and Tulane were selected to the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship Monday, marking the six straight year in which the American Athletic Conference has sent multiple teams to the national tournament.

USF, which won The American’s automatic bid to the tournament, reached the NCAA field of 64 for the fifth time in six years, while Tulane makes its fourth consecutive NCAA appearance. UCF is in the tournament for the second time in three seasons.

Ranked No. 37 in the Oracle/ITA rankings of April 23, USF will open tournament play against No. 19 Alabama in Austin, Texas, as the Bulls look for their fifth consecutive first-round win in NCAA play. The Bulls would face either Tennessee Tech or No. 2 Texas in the second round.

UCF is the highest-ranked of The American’s teams at No. 29 nationally. The Knights, who dropped a 4-3 decision to USF on the conference’s championship match, begin their NCAA run against No. 27 Florida State in Gainesville, Florida. UCF would face either Florida Gulf Coast or No. 4 Florida with a first-round win against the Seminoles.

Tulane, which closed the regular season with 10 wins in 11 matches, is ranked No. 40 in the Oracle/ITA rankings. The Green Wave, which played in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship earlier in the season, draws South Alabama in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Starkville, Mississippi. A win would send Tulane to a second-round match against either Alabama State or Mississippi State.

The American has sent at least two teams to the second round of the NCAA Championship four times in the conference’s first five. The conference has had two teams – USF in 2015 and SMU in 2016 – reach the round of 16.

The NCAA also announced the individuals who will compete for national championships in singles and doubles May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. USF's Alberto Barroso-Campos was named as a top-16 seed in the singles bracket, where he will be joined by UCF's Gabriel Decamps. The doubles bracket includes UCF's tandem of Trey Hilderbrand/Bogdan Pavel.

Tulsa's Majed Kilani and Tulane's Ewan Moore were chosen as alternates in singles, while Wichita State's Marius Frosa and Murkel Dellien were tabbed as alternates in doubles.
