PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league's weekly men's and women's golf honors for the seventh week of the spring golf season.
MEN'S GOLF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bobby Bai - UCF - Jr. - Shantou, China
Bai stood atop the podium at the FAU Invitational as he paced the Knights to their second tournament title of the year. It was the junior's second tournament championship this season. He tied a program record for the lowest 54-hole score with a 16-under 200. He was at least five strokes under par in each round with a 67-67-66. Hi performance helped UCF tie a program record for lowest tournament round with a 20-under 268 on the final day of play. The Knights' 35-under 829 ranked second in the UCF record books for 54 holes.
WOMEN'S GOLF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Michaela Fletcher - Memphis - RS-Sr. - Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
Fletcher was victorious in Memphis' Women's Intercollegiate last week with a career performance. She carded a career-best 205 in the 54-hole event to claim in the individual title. She also went for a career-low third round with a 66 to hold off Middle Tennessee's Hanley long for a one-stroke win. Her outing at the Ridgeway Country Club helped the Tigers to a third-place finish behind only Penn State and Middle Tennessee. Fletcher got better each day with rounds of 71, 68 and 66. She led all players in the field with 14 birdies and paced the field with a 4-under in par 3 scoring.
AROUND THE AMERICAN
Six teams now appear in the Golfstat Top-100 team rankings ... in addition to Bai's performance for UCF, senior Kyler Tate started and ended the day in second place overall, just four strokes back from Bai. Tate shot 70-67-67 for a 204(-12) finish. Tate finished with 17 birdies in his second-straight second place finish. This is the second consecutive top-two finish for both Bai and Tate. This is Tate's fourth top-five finish of the year and Bai's third ... SMU concluded play at The Goodwin on Saturday afternoon as freshman Ollie Osborne led the Mustangs with a one-over par final, his best round of the tournament, and a total score of 217 (74-72-72). Osborne finished eleven strokes behind the individual leader Brandon Wu of Stanford ... UConn senior Nick Harrington fired a career-best round of 7-under 65 on his way to a third consecutive Top-10 individual finish, leading the effort by the Huskies at the FAU Spring Championship at the Osprey Point Golf Club. Harrington's 65 came during Saturday's second round and was part of Harrington's aggregate 6-under 210 (75-65-70). Harrington, whose 19 birdies were the second-most of any player in the tournament, has had the three Top 10 finishes of his career in UConn's last three events. He also now has 11 career Top 20 finishes, 10 sub-70 rounds, and 29 rounds of par or better ... Temple's top two golfers, John Barone and Trey Wren, fought through high winds and cold weather Tuesday to lead the Owls to a seventh-place finish in the 21-team Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate. Only two of the 111-man field bested Barone's final round one-over 72, while Wren was one shot behind with a 73.
Four American Athletic Conference women's golfers are the top-100 of the latest Golfstat rankings as well as five teams in the top-65 and eight in the top-100 ... ECU Junior Dorthea Forbrigd shot an even-par 216 claiming a share of 11th place at the 2019 Bryan National Collegiate Sunday. It was her 16th career Top 15 finish (third this season) and marked the ninth time she has shot even-par or better since joining the program in the Fall of 2016 ... Tulsa was also at the Bryan National and finished in 15th place with a 54-hole total of 924, following a final round of 306 on Sunday. Freshman Sammy Liu turned in her second straight round of 74 to pace the Hurricane today and finished the event in 49thplace with a score of 228 ... USF women's golf ran away from the field in its second tournament victory of the spring while Natalia Villavicencio captured her second individual title of the season Tuesday at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate. USF wrapped up the regular season with a 22-shot win at Eagle's Landing Country Club after opening the spring with a title victory at the Florida Challenge ... Cincinnati women's golf carried its momentum over from Monday's improved second round with third-round 297 - its best round of the tournament and one of the five-best of the day - to finish the Memphis Intercollegiate in 11th place at Ridgeway Country Club. Senior Anika Hitt paced UC in 29th place with a final-round 73 ... Houston capped its regular season with a sixth-place finish at The Bruzzy at Lantana Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Hannah Screen finished the two-day, 54-hole event with a score of even-par 216 on the way to the fifth Top-20 finish of her young career ... SMU Junior Faith Summers tied for third, a season-best, with a 6-under par finish at The Bruzzy on Tuesday afternoon. Summers ended the tournament with a bang, as she birdied her final three holes and a total of seven in the round. The junior jumped up 11 spots on the leaderboard from Monday afternoon finishing just three strokes behind the individual co-champions ... Tulane closed out competition Sunday afternoon at the 2019 LSU Tiger Golf Classic and finished ninth with a score of 950. Over the three-day tournament, Tulane recorded 147 pars and 20 birdies. Junior Haydyn Gibson led the way for the Green Wave, as she tied for 18th with a three-round score of 231. Gibson carded a final round score of 81, while battling high winds and heavy rain throughout the day.
