UCF Earns Second-Straight Boat of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winner of the league’s boat of the week award for the second time this season.

After the Knights’ varsity eight claimed the first American Athletic Conference weekly honor of the season, UCF’s varsity 4 picked up two wins at the Sunshine State Invite last week to earn the squad its second-consecutive league honor. The Knights defeated No. 18 Alabama by the slimmest of margins (7:18.10-7:18.75) to win Friday’s heat. UCF followed with an open water win over the Crimson Tide to take the grand final title. UCF crossed the line in 7:21.30, nearly five seconds ahead of No. 18 Alabama (7:26.09).
 
 
AROUND THE AMERICAN
Temple raced tough competition at the 12-team Doc Hosea Regatta on the Cooper River. The Owls finished eighth overall in a field which featured four teams that qualified for the 2018 NCAA Championships. Temple came away with a third varsity eight bronze, while also finishing fifth in both the second varsity eight and varsity four events … UCF showed speed at the Sunshine State Invite at Nathan Benderson Park. Four of the Knights’ boats advanced to the grand final and the Knights collected five top-three finishes on the day. The second varsity eight squad of opened the day with a third place finish, crossing the line in 6:44.91. The varsity eight boat crossed the line just behind No. 18 Alabama and RV Louisville to finish third in 6:35.43 … Old Dominion, SMU and Tulsa were also in action at the Sunshine State Invite … Sacramento State competed three boats on the final day of the San Diego Crew Classic, which included the varsity eight finishing fourth, and the novice eight fifth in their respective grand finals on Sunday at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay … San Diego State was also at the Crew Classic and earned a first-place finish in the varsity petite final and a second third in the varsity eight petite final … UConn competed against Boston College and Holy Cross on Lake Quinsigamond and earned four second-place finishes.
