PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Three teams and three individuals from the American Athletic Conference are competing at the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals which take place this week, May 13-15. The 2019 American champions Memphis, along with USF and SMU were selected as teams. Cincinnati's Austin Squires, UConn's Jimmy Hervol and UCF's Kyler Tate are in as individuals.
Memphis' Bradley Bawden leads the field as he fired a 3-under, 68 in the first round of the NCAA Athens Regional on Monday to help the Tigers to a fifth-place finish on the opening day of the 54-hole postseason competition. Bawden, who finished third in last month's American Athletic Conference Championship, made the turn at 3-under 33 Monday, a front nine total aided by an eagle-3 at the par 5, 12
th.
SMU sophomore Noah Goodwin sits in fifth place leading the Mustangs after round one of the NCAA Athens Regional. Goodwin made a striking comeback after an injury at The Goodwin in late March that kept him from playing until now. He leads the Mustangs at 1-under, 70, carding two birdies on the round. The sophomore sits in a tie for fifth, just two strokes behind the individual leader from Memphis, Bawden. The team shot a 13-over first round putting them ninth on the leaderboard, five strokes off a qualifying spot.
American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Albin Bergstrom fired a 3-under, 67 to help the Bulls begin the Stanford Regional in a tie for fifth place on Monday. Making its seventh-straight regional appearance with a new-look lineup, USF carded a 2-over 282 team score and finished the opening round eight shots away from leader Stanford.
Cincinnati senior Austin Squires carded an 1-under, 69 to tie six other players for 15th place Monday during opening-round play at the NCAA Championships Stanford Regional. Squires enters Tuesday's second round five strokes behind tournament leader Jake Vincent of Southern Utah, who posted a 6-under 64 on the first day.
UConn senior Jimmy Hervol played the back nine of the University of Louisville Golf Club with a 5-under. 31 Monday, leaving himself one shot off the lead after the first round of the NCAA Golf Championship Louisville Regional. Hervol's overall 4-under, 67 put him in a four-way tie for second place behind tourney leader Matthias Schmid of Louisville (6-under, 66) heading into Tuesday's second round of the 54-hole event.
UCF's Kyler Tate teed off Monday morning in his final first round at the Myrtle Beach NCAA Regional. Tate wrapped up the first day with a 4-over, 76 and is tied for 54
th place. The senior birdied on the front nine to make the turn at one-under. Tate cooled down in his final four holes to finish with two birdies ad four bogies along with 11 pars.
