Temple Takes Final American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week Award

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The American Athletic Conference has announced the winner of the league's boat of the week award for the final time this season.

Temple's second varsity eight posted a strong showing at the historic Dad Vail Regatta, the largest collegiate regatta in the world. The Owls' 2V8 boat won gold to lead Temple to the women's and overall titles at the event for the first time since 1996. On day one, the Owls notched a huge semifinal win through white cap conditions to earn a spot in the grand final by over a 10-second margin. In flat conditions in the grand final, Temple won gold in a speedy 6:26.860, which was over five seconds faster than the second place boat. The Owls' grand finals time would have placed them fifth in the varsity eight grand finals.


AROUND THE AMERICAN
Sacramento State won three of its four races against UC Davis earlier this month at the Port of West Sacramento, winning by open water in the varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight competitions. The victory in the varsity eight allowed Sacramento State to claim its 17th Jean Runyon Cup, a prize both schools have battled for annually since 1997. The Hornets now own a 17-4 record against UC Davis over that span ... Tulsa's varsity eight and varsity four boats crossed the finish lines first in its races against the University of Central Oklahoma, the reigning Division II Champions last Sunday Monday afternoon at the US Rowing National High Performance Center. The Tulsa V8 finished in a time of 7:05.9 ahead of UCO's time of 7:12.11, while the Hurricane 2V8 boat had a time of 7:14.27 in the same event ... In its final regular season regatta before the American Athletic Conference Championships, the UConn women's rowing team competed in the 46th annual Women's Eastern Sprints at Lake Quinsigamond. The third varsity eight boat finished sixth among the competing field with a time of 7:23.109, while the varsity eight progressed to the petite final from heats in the morning and finished ahead of Boston College with a time of 6:50.100.
