PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The SMU Mustangs are headed to the 2019 NCAA Championships after advancing from the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals. SMU finished fourth at the Athens Regional. UConn’s Jimmy Hervol tied for second in Louisville but missed a playoff opportunity by a single stroke. Memphis and USF, along with Cincinnati’s Austin Squires and UCF’s Kyler Tate also just missed the cut.
 
Going into the final round, the Mustangs were in a four way tie for the final advancing slot. The team wasted no time carding nine birdies on the front nine. Getting below the advancing team line, the Mustangs had to battle in the last eight holes. The Ponies fired a 1-under round, their best of the tournament, for a 16-over finish (297-288-283–868) and in the top five to advance to the NCAA Championship.
 
The top finisher for the team was sophomore Noah Goodwin (+3, 70-71-75–216), who helped the team stay in the running for the first two rounds. Goodwin finished with a share of 18th place.
 
The Mustangs make their 20th appearance at the NCAA Championships, and first since 2015 when Bryson DeChambeau was the individual champion.
 
Hervol fired his third consecutive sub-par round on the final day of the NCAA Golf Championship Louisville Regional on Wednesday, but fell just one stroke shy of forcing a playoff for medalist honors and the chance to advance to next week's NCAA Golf Championship Finals.
 
The Hopkinton, Mass., native shot a 1-under, 70 on Wednesday at the University of Louisville Golf Club to give him an aggregate 6-under, 67-70-70=207, leaving him in a four-way tie for second place, one stroke behind Tripp Kinney of Iowa State (69-65-72=206).
 
Hervol, the first individual UConn golfer in 27 years to reach the NCAA Championship, finishes his college career as the all-time career scoring leader at UConn with a 72.44 per round average, and he holds the single-season scoring record at 70.89 per round, set this past season. The three-time All-Conference selection also owns the UConn records for sub-70 rounds with 27 and rounds of par-or-better with 64. The Louisville Regional marked the 22^nd Top 10 Finish of his career.
 
Bradley Bawden fired a 1-under, 70 and Nick Giles added an even-par 71, but the 2019 American Athletic Conference Champion Memphis Tigers came up short in its attempt Wednesday to advance to the NCAA Championship. Playing in the final round of the NCAA Athens Regional, the Tigers shot 8-over 292 and finished eighth, three spots from qualifying for the championships, which will be held later this month in Fayetteville, Ark.
 
The Tigers were competing in their first NCAA regional since 2016 and attempting to advance to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2012.
 
USF's solid 2018-19 season ended with the Bulls tying for eighth place at the Stanford Regional on Wednesday. USF finished its seventh straight NCAA Regional appearance with a 9-over team score, seven shots away from fifth place, which was where the Bulls needed to at least be to advance to the NCAA Championship rounds.

2019 American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Albin Bergstrom capped off his fantastic freshman season in strong fashion by tying for 10^th place in the 75-player field at 3-under. The Ljunghusen, Sweden native carded a 1-under, 69 in the final round to make a run at the NCAA Championship individual qualifying spot. Bergstrom's 16^th round in the 60s this season moved him within three shots of Utah's Kyler Dunkle, who advanced to the NCAA Championship with a 6-under final score. USF's latest postseason experience will benefit a young squad that included the second-ranked freshman class in the country, according to Golfstat.
 
Squires saw his Bearcats career come to a close Wednesday when he finished play at the NCAA Championships Stanford Regional tying for 33rd place at 4-over 69-69-76=214. Squires battled difficult weather conditions Wednesday in posting a 6-over 76 score. He made the turn at 1-over 36 with a birdie and six par scores to offset a pair of bogies.
 
Squires is the only Bearcat to compete in multiple NCAA Championships, Squires carved more than four strokes off his average from his freshman campaign, to qualify for the 2017 NCAA regional in West Lafayette, Ind. The 2017 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Squires earned all-conference accolades three times in his career, including unanimous selection twice. He lowered his stroke average every season to a school-record 70.62 in 2018-19.
 
Tate wrapped up his final round as a UCF Knight Wednesday afternoon at the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional. This was Tate’s third Regional appearance in his three years at UCF. Tate shot his best round of the tournament with a 4-under, 68 to finish with a 54-hole total of 1-over, 217.
 
Tate ends his senior season with a 71.2 stroke average per round, the fourth best in program history. He finishes his career at UCF with a scoring average of 72.38 over a span of 37 tournaments and 104 rounds. During his senior season, Kyler had five top-five finishes including three second place finishes after appearing in 11 tournaments.
 
UCF’s Bobby Bai was also selected to the Myrtle Beach Regional but did not compete as he begins his professional career.
 
The 2019 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships is in Fayetteville, Ark., on May 24-29 at the Blessings Golf Club.
