American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Teams Set for NCAA Preliminary Meets

NCAA Championships Information  
 
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The road to Austin goes through Jacksonville, Fla., and Sacramento, Calif., as 148 outdoor track and field athletes from around the American Athletic Conference will represent the league at the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships Preliminary Rounds from May 23-25. All 12 American institutions will be represented.
 
The University of North Florida in Jacksonville will host the East Preliminary and California State University at Sacramento will host the West Preliminary. The top-48 individuals and top 24 relays qualified for the preliminary rounds. Combined events (Heptathlon and Decathlon), are not contested at the preliminary round sites, as the top 24 athletes in the nation in each event qualified directly into the NCAA Championships. Wichita State’s Ben Johnson is ranked 18th nationally in the men’s decathlon with his first-place score of 7,413 points at The American Outdoor Championships, earning a spot in the NCAA Championships field.
 
The top 12 individuals and relays from each event at both regions will advance to the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Austin, Texas, at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
 
In total, 65 men and 83 women from around The American qualified to compete in the NCAA Prelims. The Houston men lead the conference with 19 bids, while the Wichita State women are sending a conference-high 12 athletes to compete. In total, Houston’s men’s and women’s teams combined for 24 qualifiers, while Wichita State ranks second in the conference with 23. Memphis has the third-most individuals making the trip with 19.
 
UCF, Cincinnati, UConn, ECU, Memphis, USF, Temple and Tulane have combined to send 85 athletes to Jacksonville for the NCAA East Prelim, while Houston, SMU, Tulsa and Wichita State have 63 athletes punching tickets to the NCAA West Prelim in Sacramento. In total, The American has combined for 11 top-10 marks in the NCAA during the outdoor season with Houston accounting for six.
 
The Houston men won their fourth-straight and fifth overall American Outdoor Track and Field Championship, while the Wichita State women earned their first title at Cessna Stadium in Wichita, Kansas this season. The Cougars have cracked the top five in 2019 and finished third place at the NCAA Outdoor Championships a year ago. The Houston men are also coming off a second-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships.
