Nine Players Earn All-America Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  Nine American Athletic Conference athletes earned All-America recognition from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, College Baseball Foundation, College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), D1Baseball.com, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), Perfect Game/Rawlings and the Senior CLASS Award as announced by the organizations this spring. UConn righthander Jacob Wallace, ECU lefthander Jake Agnos, ECU utility player Alec Burleson, ECU designated hitter Spencer Brickhouse, Tulane third baseman Kody Hoese, Tulane outfielder Hudson Haskin, Memphis outfielder Hunter Goodman, Memphis shortstop Alec Trela and Wichita State infielder Luke Ritter all picked up awards.

Wallace, a finalist for the College Baseball Foundation’s Pitcher of the Year award, locked down the fifth-most saves in the country with a conference-best 16 this season. The righthander went 3-1 with a 0.64 ERA, allowing only three earned runs and 10 walks on the year. In 30 appearances, he struck out 68 in 42.0 innings of work. Making two appearances out of the bullpen against Oklahoma State in the final two games of the NCAA Oklahoma City Regional, Wallace retired all 15 batters he faced in order, including striking out 12, in 5.0 shutout innings. Wallace earned first team All-New England and All-Conference honors this season. He was selected in the third round of the MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies.

Agnos, The American’s Pitcher of the Year, led the conference with 11 wins on the mound through 17 starts and 102.0 innings pitched this season. The junior lefty finished the year with a league-best 2.29 ERA and totaled an American single-season record of 145 strikeouts and also set the conference’s career record in strikeouts with 295. Scattering 26 earned runs and 43 walks on the year, Agnos held opposing hitters to a .198 batting average.  He reached double digits in strikeouts five times this season and pitched seven or more innings in six appearances. A four-time American Pitcher of the Week and first team All-Conference selection, Agnos is majoring in Management Information Systems, sporting a 3.96 GPA on the year. He was picked in the fourth round of the MLB Draft by the New York Yankees.

Burleson was one of the top two-way players in the nation this year, owning six pitching wins, while also leading his team at the plate with a .370 batting average. In 24 appearances on the mound, including nine starts, the sophomore southpaw totaled 68 strikeouts in 60.1 innings pitched with a 3.28 ERA and five saves. At the plate, he ended the year ranked third in The American in batting average, second in hits (91), first in doubles (23), second in RBIs (61), second in total bases (141) and eighth in slugging percentage (.573). A three-time American Player of the Week, Burleson was a first team All-Conference selection in the outfield and second team All-Conference honoree in the utility position spot this season. Majoring in Business Management, Burleson finished his sophomore academic year with a 3.94 GPA.

Spencer Brickhouse  * Jr. * DH * ECU * Zebulon, N.C.

Brickhouse started 60 games for the Pirates batting .335 (69-for-206) with 14 home runs and 56 RBIs. He led ECU in on-base percentage (.467) runs (57), slugging percentage (.626) and walks (45), while sharing the team lead in triples and multi-RBI games. A seventh-round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Brickhouse tallied 19 multi-hit games and collected a team-high seven game-winning RBIs (14 career).

A first team All-Conference pick and American Newcomer Position Player of The Year, Goodman finished the year ranked top 10 in The American in hits (78), runs scored (51), home runs (13), RBIs (67), total bases (137) and slugging percentage (.573). His 67 RBIs led the conference and ended the year ranked 20th in the NCAA. He also swiped 11 of 12 bases.

Alec Trela * Jr. * SS * Memphis * Bloomington, Ill.
Third Team All-America: CoSIDA Academic

Trela, a junior Biomedical Engineering student with a 4.00 GPA, was a key contributor for the Tigers in the field and at the plate. He drew a team-high 38 walks with a .406 on-base percentage, 53 hits, 15 doubles, six home runs and 32 RBIs. Trela sported a .935 fielding percentage at shortstop with 68 putouts and a team-high 119 assists. He ended the season on a 21-game on-base streak and posted 15 multi-hit outings.

Hoese, The American’s Player of the Year, has established himself as one of the conference’s all-time top hitters. Leading the league with a .391 batting average to end the season, he ranked among the top 20 in the nation in nine offensive categories, leading the country with 183 total bases. Hoese set American single-season records in home runs (23), total bases (183), slugging percentage (.779) and runs scored (72). A two-time American Player of the Week, Hoese was named first team All-Conference and National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). He was named one of 25 semifinalists for the 2019 Golden Spikes Award and one of 26 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy. Hoese highlighted this year’s MLB Draft selections after being chosen in the first round at No. 25 overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

A second team All-Conference selection, Haskin hit .372 with 19 doubles, 10 home runs, four triples and 52 RBIs. The rookie outfielder ranked third in The American in batting average and second in slugging percentage (.647), as well as top 10 in hits (77), runs scored (54), doubles, triples, RBIs, total bases (134) and on-base percentage (.459).

Luke Ritter * Sr. * INF * Wichita State * Overland Park, Kan.

Honorable Mention All-America: Perfect Game/Rawlings

Ritter led the Shockers with a .333 batting average, going along with 47 runs, 74 hits, 16 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 40 RBIs, 36 walks and 12 stolen bases. He also posted team-highs in both slugging (.545) and on-base percentage (.458). His .458 on-base percentage ranked fourth in The American, while his .333 batting average was tied for sixth. To be eligible for the Senior CLASS Award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: character, classroom, community and competition.
