COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UConnHuskies.com) – Rising sophomore Christyn Williams of the UConn women's basketball team was named as one of four athletes to represent USA Basketball at the inaugural FIBA 3x3 Women's Series stop from May 31-Jun 1 in Chengdu, China.
The FIBA 3x3 Women's Series is a new 3x3 competition series dedicated to women athletes from around the globe. Joining Williams on the team are Bella Alarie (Princeton), Charli Collier (Texas) and Aleah Goodman (Oregon State).
Up to 12 events in the series are expected to take place this year from May to September and will be announced throughout the season on the official website https://ws.fiba3x3.com. Also competing in the Chengdu event are 3x3 national teams from Australia, host China, France, Japan, Mongolia, Netherlands and Ukraine.
The eight teams have been split into two groups of four for preliminary round play, and the USA on May 31 will open against France, before facing Australia and Mongolia in Pool A. The medal round will take place June 1, and teams will be seeded based on preliminary round standings. The No. 1 team from each pool will earn a bye to the semifinals. The semifinal play-in games will feature A2 versus B3 and B2 will take on A3. The gold medal game will cap off the day's games.
Williams boasts the most USA Basketball experience of the team, including playing 3x3 basketball. She was a member of the 2017 USA 3x3 U18 World Cup Team that captured the gold medal. She also took home bronze from the 2016 U17 World Cup, silver from the 2017 U19 World Cup and gold from the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship.
Williams started every game of her freshman campaign in Storrs, averaging 11.7 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. She was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year.
