HOUSTON, Texas – American Pitcher of the Year Georgina Corrick struck out nine Memphis batters on Thursday morning as No. 1 USF defeated the eighth-seeded Tigers 8-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2019 American Softball Championship.
Corrick allowed two baserunners, hitting Gracie Morton in the fourth inning and allowing a one out single back up the middle by Alyssa Dean in the top of the sixth.
Meghan Sheehan’s RBI single opened the scoring for the Bulls in the bottom of the third, followed by a Lindsey Devitt bases loaded walk. USF added two additional runs in the inning via a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Macy Cook.
Sheehan was in the middle of the scoring again in the fifth, notching an RBI single and later scoring on an error as she stole third. The Bulls closed the morning with Lindsey Devitt’s two-run homer in the sixth inning.
Along with Sheehan’s three hits, the Bulls received two hits each from Devitt and AnaMarie Bruni. Corrick recorded her 24
th win of the season, allowing one hit while also hitting on batter.
Dean’s one out single in the sixth was Memphis’ lone hit. Karli Perque took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) in 2.1 innings. Mariah Nichols and Bayleigh Wisher each tossed 1.2 innings of relief.
USF advances to the semifinals of the American Championship for the fifth time, and will face the winner of No. 4 Wichita State/No. 5 UCF on Friday.
