Cincinnati 3, #21 Tennessee 0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-23)
Cincinnati opened its weekend by sweeping No. 21 Tennessee with set scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-23 at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Michigan. The win was the first ranked victory achieved by an American Athletic Conference volleyball team this season.
Cincinnati turned the tide in the opening set with the score tied 12-12, winning eight of the next 11 points from the Volunteers to claim a 20-15 lead. Reigning American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week Jordan Thompson logged the final four kills of the opening period for the Bearcats, finishing off a Kerstin Ficker assist to close the 25-18 set win.
Both teams jockeyed for position in the second stanza, as Tennessee drew within one point at 18-17. Cincinnati responded with a 5-0 run that was punctuated by an Armania Heckenmueller service ace to push the Bearcats in front 23-17. A Tennessee attack error and a Thompson kill provided Cincinnati with the commanding 2-0 match lead.
Despite Tennessee clawing back to a 22-all tie after Cincinnati raced out to a six-point advantage (13-7) in the final frame, the Bearcats were able to put the contest away. An attack error by Tennessee and back-to-back kills from Thompson and Maria Mallon completed the Cincinnati sweep.
Thompson led all players in the match with 26 kills and hit at a .417 clip, while Mallon contributed 13 kills and an even .500 attack percentage. Heckenmueller notched 39 assists and tied for the team lead with seven digs.
Temple 3, Ohio 2 (25-22, 20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12)
Temple bounced back from a 2-1 deficit to claim the final two sets and a match victory against Ohio at the American Volleyball Classic in Washington. The Owls took home the 3-2 win over the Bobcats in a 25-22, 20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12 final.
Gem Grimshaw guided Temple with a double-double that featured a team-high 20 kills and 15 digs, and Miray Bolukbasi added 11 kills. Tyler Lindgren led all players with 49 assists and added 18 digs, while Averi Salvador registered 20 digs and 12 assists.
Temple 3, Winthrop 0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-12)
Temple kept its Friday momentum going by moving to 5-0 on the season with a sweep of Winthrop, 25-18, 25-20, 25-12.
Tyler Lindgren added a second double-double of the day, finishing with 29 assists and 19 digs to pace Temple. Gem Grimshaw added a team-high 15 kills in the victory, while Katerina Papazoglou matched Lindgren’s double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
ECU 3, North Florida 1 (25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 27-25)
East Carolina began the UNF Invitational on a high note with a 3-1 triumph over host North Florida on Friday in Jacksonville, Florida. The Pirates neutralized the Ospreys by set scores of 25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 27-25.
Shelby Miller posted a double-double with 29 assists and 12 digs, and Sydney Kleinman finished just shy of a double-double with a team-high 18 kills along with nine digs. Sydney Hall also racked up 12 kills in the win for ECU.
ECU 3, Mercer 1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20)
East Carolina improved to 4-0 on the year after stopping Mercer in four sets, 20-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20.
Bri Wood posted a match-high 14 kills and a .565 hitting percentage, while Sydney Kleinman added 12 kills and hit at a .304 clip. Brandee Markwith finished the Pirates win with a match-best 16 digs.
Memphis 3, Gardner-Webb 0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-14)
Memphis kicked off its own Tiger Brawl with an opening sweep of Gardner-Webb. The Tigers took the win by set scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-14.
Meredith Wallace logged 11 digs and came up just short of a double-double with a team-high eight kills for Memphis. Sabrina Bianco set the Tiger pace with 25 assists along with five digs, while Mia Migliore chipped in 12 digs.
Memphis 3, Arkansas Pine-Bluff 0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-16)
Memphis moved to 5-0 on the year with an emphatic sweep of Arkansas Pine-Bluff, featuring set wins of 25-19, 25-11, 25-16.
Sabrina Bianco anchored a balanced Memphis attack with 26 assists and four digs, and Meredith Wallace added nine kills for the Tigers. Gigi Crescenzo carded seven kills and seven digs in the victory.
Houston 3, UTSA 1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21)
Houston claimed its second straight win by outlasting UTSA in four sets, securing the final three frames of a 19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 decision.
Abbie Jackson notched a season-high 30 kills for the Cougars, adding in six digs for the match. Abby Irvine fashioned a double-double that consisted of 50 assists and 11 digs, and Katie Karbo added a team-high 18 digs to the Houston victory.
Tulsa 3, Louisiana Tech 1 (27-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-20)
Tulsa shook off a second set defeat at the hands of Louisiana Tech to win the final two stanzas to complete a 3-1 triumph (27-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-20) at the KC Roos Klassic in Kansas City, Missouri.
Reigning American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week Taylor Horsfall paced Tulsa with a team-high 20 digs, while Dilara Gedikoglu posted a double-double that featured 25 kills and 19 digs. Setter Roosa Rautio finished a single dig shy of a double-double herself, adding nine digs to her team-high 30 assists.
Tulane 3, Missouri State 0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-16)
Tulane pushed its season record to 4-1 by sweeping Missouri State on the first night of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Volleyball Classic in New Orleans, with the Green Wave winning 25-17, 25-22, 25-16.
Four different players had five or more kills for Tulane, led by the seven kills of Kayla Dinkins. Dinkins also registered a match-high seven blocks. Amanda Giardina dished out 16 assists and Jenna Ibieta logged 14 helpers for the Green Wave in the victory.
UCF 3, South Carolina 0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-23)
UCF kicked off the UCF Challenge in Orlando in high style with a sweep of South Carolina, edging the Gamecocks 25-21, 27-25, 25-23.
McKenna Melville posted 21 kills and nine digs to lead the Knights, and Erin Olson added a double-double with 24 assists and 11 digs in the UCF win. Kristina Fisher registered a team-high 15 digs on the night.
Michigan State 3, Cincinnati 1 (12-25, 21-25, 25-20, 20-25)
Cincinnati battled gallantly in a four-set defeat to host Michigan State at the Spartan Invitational, with the final scores tallying 12-25, 21-25, 25-20, 20-25.
Jordan Thompson notched 17 kills and eight digs for Cincinnati, while Maria Mallon added 14 kills and eight digs. Armania Heckenmueller contributed 36 assists to the Bearcats cause.
FGCU 3, USF 0 (13-25, 17-25, 14-25)
USF suffered a three-set setback against FGCU to open the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Florida. The Bulls lost a 13-25, 17-25, 14-25 decision.
Jac’cara Walker and Jac St. Cin led USF with seven kills against FGCU, and CC Clausen compiled a team-high 15 digs.
South Dakota 3, Tulsa 0 (17-25, 21-25, 22-25)
Tulsa dropped its opening match of the KC Roos Klassic versus South Dakota, with the Golden Hurricanes on the wrong side of a 17-25, 21-25, 22-25 score line.
Dilara Gedikoglu registered nine kills and eight digs for Tulsa, as Taylor Horsfall added a team-high 12 digs.
Boston College 3, UConn 2 (25-19, 16-25, 13-25, 25-15, 8-15)
In the second game of the UConn Challenge, the host Huskies sent their match with Boston College to a fifth set following an emphatic 25-15 triumph in set four. UConn ultimately finished on the wrong end of a five-set result, 25-19, 16-25, 13-25, 25-15, 8-15.
Jasmine Davis (14 kills and 12 digs) and Caylee Parker (12 kills and 13 digs) logged double-doubles for UConn, while Courtney Morris added a match-high 39 assists.
#RV Cal Poly 3, Wichita State 2 (21-25, 25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 11-15)
Late on the West Coast, Wichita State fought to the very end of a five-set slugfest with host Cal Poly on day two of the ShareSLO Mustang Challenge in San Luis Obispo, California. The Shockers dropped a 21-25, 25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 11-15 result to the Mustangs.
Megan Taflinger guided Wichita State with 19 kills, and McKayla Wuensch (32 assists and 11 digs), Nicole Anderson (17 kills and 15 digs) and Sina Uluave (14 kills and 12 digs) added double-doubles on the night for the Shockers.
