PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly football honors for the second week of the 2019 college football season.


 
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Xavier Jones • SMU • Sr. • RB • Spring, Texas
Jones rushed for 127 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries to lead SMU to a 49-27 win against North Texas, improving the Mustangs to 2-0. Jones scored on touchdown runs of 24, 10 and 51 yards, turning in his second straight game with three TDs.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Patrick Nelson • SMU • Sr. • S • Chicago, Ill.
Nelson had seven tackles to go with 2.0 sacks and an interception in SMU’s 49-27 win against North Texas. Facing an offense that had put up 51 points and 575 yards a week earlier, Nelson and the Mustangs limited the Mean Green to 396 yards and 27 points.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dalton Witherspoon • Houston • Jr. • K • Moore, Okla.
Witherspoon scored 13 points, connecting on three field goals and four PATs to help Houston to a 37-17 win against Prairie View A&M. Witherspoon hit a career-best 46-yard field goal in the first quarter and added makes from 22 and 29 yards.
 
HONOR ROLL

Threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns and had a rushing TD in his first career start, a 48-14 win at Florida Atlantic.
 
Eric Mitchell • UCF • Jr. • LB
Had nine tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack in a 48-14 win at Florida Atlantic.
 
Darius Pinnix Jr. • ECU • Jr. • RB
Had career highs of 21 carries and 134 yards with two touchdowns in a 48-9 win against Gardner-Webb.
 
Brady White • Memphis • Jr. • QB
Completed 17 of 21 passes (80.1 percent) for 337 yards and two touchdowns in a 55-24 win against Southern.
 
Shamari Brooks • Tulsa • Jr. • RB
Rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries in a 34-16 win at San Jose State.
