PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly indoor track & field honors for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 19.
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Dayo Akindele * Sr. * Houston
Akindele raced to victory in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.78 for Houston at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational. Akindele’s time was the fastest in The American in the event thus far this season and ranks 11th nationally.
Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Mason Buckmaster * Sr. * Wichita State
Buckmaster finished as the runner-up in the high jump at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular by clearing 2.15m (7-0.5). Buckmaster ranks second in the conference and 21st in the NCAA in the high jump this season.
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Chelsea Francis * Sr. * SMU
Francis picked up a win in the 60-meter dash competing at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational, running a top prelim time of 7.30 and adding a win as a member of the 4x400-meter relay squad for SMU that took the title in 3:44.72. Francis ranks first in The American and is tied for 11th nationally in the 60-meter dash thus far in 2020.
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Sidney Sapp * So. * Wichita State
Sapp secured the top finish in the high jump at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular, clearing 1.75m (5-8.75) for the event win. Sapp ranks first in The American and is tied for 25th nationally in the event this season.
