PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco has issued the following statement on the passing of former ACC Commissioner Gene Corrigan.

The American Athletic Conference mourns the passing of former NCAA President, ACC Commissioner and Notre Dame, Virginia and Washington and Lee athletic director Gene Corrigan. Quite simply, Gene was a giant of a man whose stature was unrivaled as a result of an incredible and varied career as one of the most important and respected administrators in college sports. An outstanding scholar and athlete at Duke University, Gene went on to make seminal contributions to the fabric of college sports. Current and future generations of student-athletes will be indebted to him. My family and I were privileged to know Gene as a friend and mentor over almost four decades and as a warm and devoted family man who was also beloved in the college community. Meeting Gene was like opening a bottle of champagne. He possessed a deep understanding of people and issues, and a moral authority that led to sound decision-making and the forging of consensus on key NCAA and ACC initiatives as well as innovative advances in the college football postseason and the structure of television and media agreements.

All of us at The American have Gene in our thoughts and prayers and convey our deepest condolences to his beloved wife of 66 years, Lena, and to his immediate and extended family and many friends in the college community and beyond.
