UCF's Decamps Named Men's Tennis Player Of The Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of its weekly men’s and women’s tennis honors for the week-ending January 27.

Decamps, who was ranked No. 22 in the Oracle/ITA fall rankings, defeated two top-30 players in singles play as UCF earned a split in two matches in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Los Angeles. Decamps opened the event with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles to lead the Knights to a 4-3 win against No. 24 San Diego as he knocked off the ITA’s No. 30-ranked player. He was a winner in both singles and doubles in a 4-3 loss to No. 10 UCLA, scoring a three-set win against UCLA’s Keegan Smith, who is ranked No. 7 by the ITA. and claiming a 6-2 win in doubles.

The 2020 American Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will be held in April at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa. The women’s championship takes place April 15-18, while the men’s championship will be played April 16-19.
 
 
MEN’S TENNIS UPDATE
UCF (2-2) advanced to the championship match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Los Angeles as the Knights scored a 4-3 opening-round win against No. 24 San Diego. UCF battled No. 10 UCLA to the wire in the final before falling 4-3 in a match that saw the clinching point come down to a three-set battle at No. 4 singles. Gabriel Decamps defeated a pair of top-30 opponents in the event and is The American’s highest ranked individual in both singles (No. 22) and doubles (No. 6). The Knights face two more ranked opponents this week with a Friday match at No. 7 Wake Forest and a Sunday visit to No. 23 Virginia.
 
UConn (1-3) dropped a pair of matches in West Point, New York, as the Huskies opened their spring season with a 4-0 loss to St. John’s and a 7-0 setback to Army. UConn is on the road for three matches this week as the Huskies visit Temple Friday, Villanova Saturday and Delaware Sunday.
 
ECU (2-0) opened its season with a pair of wins as the Pirates topped North Carolina Central 7-0 and beat UNC Asheville 6-1. Diogo Marques, who is ranked No. 103 in the Oracle/ITA rankings, won both of his matches at No. 1 singles to improve his 2019-20 record to 10-0. The Pirates host Navy Friday and will entertain Winthrop Sunday.
 
Memphis (1-3) split its two matches at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, as the Tigers fell 4-0 to No. 23 Virginia before rebounding for a 4-0 win against Utah State. Memphis plays a neutral-site match this week as the Tigers head to Oxford, Mississippi, Saturday to face No. 14 Oklahoma State.
 
USF (4-1) ran its season-opening winning streak to four matches to start the spring season as the Bulls topped Fresno State 4-2 in the first match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Gainesville, Florida. The Bulls fell 4-0 to No. 2 Florida in the championship match. The Bulls will host Mississippi State Friday in Tampa before heading to New York City Sunday to face No. 18 Columbia.
 
SMU (5-1) scored two wins in two different cities Saturday to improve to 5-1 on the young season. The Mustangs took to the road for a 4-3 win at Lamar and returned to Dallas to score a 6-1 victory against UT Tyler. SMU overcame a 3-0 deficit to win four straight singles contests in the win against Lamar, while the Mustangs swept the singles round in the victory against UT Tyler. SMU has another doubleheader set for this Saturday as the Mustangs host Oklahoma Baptist and Portland.
 
Temple (0-2) opened its 2020 spring season with 4-0 setbacks to No. 2 Florida and Fresno State at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Gainesville, Florida. The Owls will be at home for a pair of dual matches this week as Temple hosts St. Francis (N.Y.) Thursday in Philadelphia and takes on UConn Friday in Norristown, Pennsylvania.
 
Tulane (2-2) opened the season with a pair of 7-0 wins against Jackson State, but the Green Wave evened its record at the end of the week with a 4-1 loss to No. 11 Stanford and a 4-2 setback to Miami (Fla.) in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Palo Alto, California. Hamish Stewart has gone 4-0 in singles play, playing at the No. 2 position, while Luis Erlenbusch is a combined 3-0 between the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. Tulane visits LSU Friday and will host Virginia Tech Sunday.
 
Tulsa (5-1) reached the championship match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Columbus, Ohio, as the Golden Hurricane took a 4-2 win against Utah to extend its season-opening winning streak to five matches. Tulsa fell to No. 6 Ohio State in the final, however, to suffer its first loss of the year. Stefan Hampe has gone 5-0 in singles to start the dual match season and is 9-3 overall. Tulsa’s lone match this week is a Friday contest against No. 9 Texas A&M at the Case Tennis Center.
 
Wichita State (3-2) went 2-1 in a three-match series in Fayetteville, Arkansas, as the Shockers fell 4-2 to Middle Tennessee, but bounced back with a 4-3 victory against Arkansas and a 4-1 win against Drake. Marius Frosa, who joined Murkel Dellien as NCAA quarterfinalists in doubles play last season, has turned in a 3-0 singles record in dual matches thus far. Wichita State visits Charlotte Thursday, then heads to Knoxville, Tennessee, for a Saturday match against Georgia State and a Sunday contest against Tennessee
