American Announces Weekly Football Honors

IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly football honors for the fifth week of the 2020 college football season.
 
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Shane Buechele • SMU • Sr. • QB • Arlington, Texas
Buechele led SMU to a 30-27 win against No. 25/24 Memphis, leaving the Mustangs as the nation’s only 4-0 team in 2020. Buechele completed 32 of 45 passes for a career-high 474 yards and three touchdowns and had a career-high 501 yards of total offense, good for second on SMU’s single-game chart. Buechele, who registered his eighth career game with 300 passing yards and his fourth career 400-yard game, ended Week 5 with 1,326 passing yards, which leads all NCAA FBS players.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Zaven Collins • Tulsa • Jr. • LB • Hominy, Okla.
Collins led a Tulsa defense that limited No. 11 UCF, which had averaged 50.0 points in its first two games, to only three second-half points as the Golden Hurricane rallied for a 34-26 win, snapping the Knights’ 21-game home winning streak. Collins had a team-high 10 tackles to go with 3.5 tackles for loss, an interception, two pass breakups, a quarterback hurry and a safety that accounted for the Golden Hurricane’s first points of the game. Collins has 7.5 tackles for loss through two games and ranks second among NCAA FBS players at 3.8 TFL per game.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Chris Naggar • SMU • Sr. • K • Arlington, Texas
Naggar scored 12 points, going 3-for-3 on field goals and 3-for-3 on PATs to deliver a 30-27 win against No. 25/24 Memphis, lifting the Mustangs to 4-0 on the season. Naggar’s third field goal of the game was a 43-yard kick with nine seconds left to account for the winning points, while he also connected from 27 and 25 yards. 
 
Lachlan Wilson • Tulsa • RFr. • P • Eaglemont, Victoria, Australia
Wilson played a key part in Tulsa’s 34-26 come-from-behind win at No. 11 UCF, ending the Knights’ 21-game home winning streak as he averaged 45.1 yards on seven punts. Wilson saw all three of his punts downed inside the UCF 4-yard line in the second half, including a key punt inside the 1-yard line late in the contest, allowing Tulsa to limit the Knights to three second-half points.

Had a game-high 11 tackles with a tackle for loss in a 28-7 win against USF.
 
Gerrid Doaks • Cincinnati • Sr. • RB 
Rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries in a 28-7 win against USF.
 
Tre Tucker • Cincinnati • So. • WR 
Had 116 all-purpose yards, including a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in a 28-7 win against USF. 
 
Reggie Roberson Jr. • SMU • Sr. • WR 
Had five receptions for 243 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-27 win against No. 25/24 Memphis.
 
Zach Smith • Tulsa • Sr. • QB 
Completed 17 of 29 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-26 win at No. 11 UCF.
