At one point during last weekend's season-opening weekend of the reborn XFL, P.J. Walker completed a touchdown pass to Khalil Lewis in TDECU Stadium in a game in which June Jones was one of the head coaches.
Needless to say, the American Athletic Conference has made its mark on the XFL.
Walker, the former Temple signal-caller, was the highlight of the league's opening weekend. He completed 23 of 39 passes, finishing with 298 total yards and four touchdowns for the Houston Roughnecks. That performance made Walker the first XFL Star of the Week.
Walker was one of 29 former American Athletic Conference players on XFL rosters during the first week of the season. Former ECU QB Philip Nelson was the Opening Day starter for the Dallas Renegades, while two former USF quarterbacks saw action in Week 1 as well. B.J. Daniels made a late appearance for the Seattle Dragons last week and is poised to see more time in this week's game against the Tampa Bay Vipers. The Vipers could be led by Quinton Flowers, who was particularly effective last week and could be poised for the Week 2 start in Seattle.
Beyond the players, two American Athletic Conference venues are serving as home fields for XFL clubs. The Roughnecks play on the Houston campus at TDECU Stadium, which was chosen this week as the site of the XFL championship game. The Vipers, meanwhile, call Raymond James Stadium in Tampa home.
