02.15.20

Memphis 6, Xavier 1 - Box Score
Behind a one-hit effort on the mound, Memphis baseball opened the 2020 campaign with a 6-1 win against Xavier on Friday afternoon at FedExPark.

Senior lefty Danny Denz tossed five innings of no-hit ball and registered five strikeouts in his fifth career win. In relief, junior Landon Kelly tallied a pair of strikeouts in three innings pitched, while senior Takoda Metoxen preserved the shutout as he struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth.

Offensively, rookie Austin Baskin collected a pair of hits and plated a run. Sophomore Hunter Goodman drove in a pair of runs, including a solo homer in the third inning. Senior Alec Trela and junior Chris Swanberg also each tallied an RBI.

ECU 2, William & Mary 1 (11 innings) - Box Score
Seth Caddell's RBI single up the middle scored Trevor Losito from third base lifting No. 19 East Carolina to a 2-1 walk-off win over William & Mary in 11 innings Friday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. The win marked the first time since 1979 that the Pirates won an extra inning game on Opening Day.

With the game tied at one-all heading to the home-half of the 11th, Alec Burleson singled through the left side on the first pitch he saw off of Jacob Haney. A Haney balk moved him over to second and Thomas Francisco's single down the right field line put runners on the corners. Losito pinch-ran for Burleson and darted home on Caddell's lone hit of the game.

Garrett Saylor (1-0) notched his first career win at ECU tossing a scoreless frame of relief with a walk and three strikeouts. Burleson, who got his second-straight start on Opening Day, allowed just one run (earned) on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts over seven frames. The trio of Trystan Kimmel (0.1 IP, 1 BB), Matt Bridges (1.2 IP, 4 Ks) and Cam Colmore (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) combined for three scoreless frames out of the bullpen. For Bridges, it was his first game action since April 29, 2018 when he worked two-thirds of an inning against Houston.

UCF 2, Siena 1 - Box Score
UCF opened the 2020 with a win on Friday at John Euliano Park, marking the 12th win in a row on Opening Knight. The Knights took down Siena by a score of 2-1 thanks to a dominating performance on the mound by Colton Gordon.

It took five innings, but the Black and Gold got on the scoreboard first thanks to an RBI from freshman Matt Archer, his first as a Knight. UCF tacked on another run in the sixth when Gephry Pena drove a triple to the right center field gap and later scored as Tom Josten's first career RBI.

The Knights were in the driver's seat for most of the evening, thanks to Colton Gordon putting up 10 strikeouts and only allowing four hits in his UCF debut. Gordon's 10 strikeouts were the most by an Opening Knight pitcher in over a decade; Cre Finfrock tossed up nine in 2016 and Robbie Howell matched that total in 2017.

Tulane 4, FGCU 3 - Box Score
Despite facing an early deficit, Tulane kicked off the 2020 season with a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Florida Gulf Coast on a cold and windy Friday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

With the game even at three in the bottom of the fifth inning, junior catcher Haydan Hastings laced a single to center field to drive in redshirt senior Luke Glancy to give Tulane (1-0) a 4-3 lead over Florida Gulf Coast (0-1). The visitors were on the board first, but the Green Wave never lost hope.

Tulane pitchers struck out 16 batters, redshirt senior Ty Johnson had three hits and senior first baseman Grant Mathews had two more as the Green Wave rode stellar pitching to an opening day victory.

Houston 7, Youngstown State 3 - Box Score
Houston scored five unanswered runs in a 7-3 win over Youngstown State on Opening Day at Sanders Field at Schroeder Park. The Cougars (1-0), who are ranked No. 35 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, rallied from a 3-2 deficit with two runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the seventh to come from behind against the Penguins (0-1).

Senior southpaw Brayson Hurdsman (1-0) picked up the win in relief. The Utah native started the fifth and went the rest of the way with four scoreless innings of one-hit ball. He walked one and struck out six. Ryan Hernandez went 3-for-3 with a double, RBI, run scored and two walks (one intentional), while Tyler Bielamowicz finished 2-for-3 with one double, three RBI and one walk.

Cal Poly 5, UConn 0 - Box Score
Three errors and just two hits for offense led to a 5-0 defeat for UConn against Cal Poly on Opening Day at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick as part of the MLB4 Tournament.

Junior starting pitcher Joe Simeone was strong for the Huskies with four solid innings of work, allowing just three hits and striking out six. Two costly errors in the infield along with a foot off the bag on a potential inning-ending double play ball led to a pair of runs for the Mustangs in the third and elevated Simeone's pitch count.

Georgia State 9, Cincinnati 8 (10 innings) - Box Score
Cincinnati battled back-and-forth but dropped the 2020 season-opener at Georgia State by a score of 9-8 in ten innings. The Bearcats opened with an early lead, posted a big frame, let the Panthers come back midway through, tied it in the seventh and took the lead in the ninth. However, Georgia State answered with two of their own in the ninth to tie it and walked off in the tenth.

Wyatt Stapp went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk, Joey Bellini had two hits, including a two-run double. Evan Shawver went 4.0 innings in the start with six hits, two earned runs, no walks and seven strikeouts.

Marist 6, USF 4 (12 innings) - Box Score
USF combined for 18 strikeouts and staged a late-inning rally to force extra innings, however the Bulls dropped their season-opener on Friday night to visiting Marist College, 6-4, in 12 innings. Marist got to opening night starter Collin Sullivan early, running up the senior's pitch count as the Red Foxes scored four unanswered runs through six innings of play.

USF continued its late game surge forcing extra innings after a ninth inning comeback. Alex Bello scored the third run for the Bulls on a fielding error by Dylan Hoy, and Jake Sullivan tied the game at four-all with a one-out single to third, scoring Dutka. Marist eventually got the best of the Bulls in the top of the 12th driving in two runs to take game one of the weekend series.

Northwestern State 11, Wichita State 0 - Box Score
Junior right-hander Jake Hamilton tossed five innings of no-hit baseball and struck out 13 in his Wichita State debut, but it wasn't enough, as the Shockers fell to the Northwestern State Demons, 11-0, in its 2020 season opener Friday at Brown-Stroud Field.

After a hit by pitch with two outs in the bottom of the third, Hamilton retired seven consecutive batters before giving up a lead-off walk in the bottom of the sixth, ending his outing. The Asher, Okla., native's 13 Ks were the most in a single-game since Cale Elam struck out 13 at Bradley on April 12, 2013.
