Florida 15, Maryland 14
COLLEGE PARK, Md. –The No. 14 Florida lacrosse team stunned top-ranked and defending national champions Maryland on Saturday afternoon, winning the game 15-14 after scoring the game-winning goal with less than a minute to play.
The Gators broke Maryland's 86-game home win streak and serve the Terps their first home loss since March 10, 2012.
This win is also the first time since April 12, 2012 that the Gators have knocked off the top-ranked team in the IWLCA rankings (Northwestern, 8-7).
Shannon Kavanagh led Florida on the offensive end, recording a career-high eight goals. That is the second-best total in a game in program history. Brianna Harris and Emerson Cabrera each notched a hat trick of their own on the day, a career-high for Cabrera. Hannah Mardiney added in her first goal of the season as well.
Florida shot 15-for-26, good for a .583 shooting percentage on the day.
Harris notched three assists, while Kaala Puglisi added one of her own.
Defensively, the Gators caused six turnovers, led by two from Cabrera and Becky Browndorf – a career-best for both.
Cara Trombetta marked Brindi Griffin, holding her to 1-of-5 shooting, while Kaitlyn Dabkowski held Catie May to 2-of-5 shooting on the day.
Sarah Reznick once again had a day in the cage, recording a career-high 14 saves. That is the third-best total in a game in program history.
ECU 20, Wofford 5
GREENVILLE, N.C. – ECU rolled to a 20-5 win over Wofford on Saturday afternoon at Johnson Stadium in the Pirates' home-opener.
ECU improves to 2-1 on the season while Wofford falls to 0-2. It is the second straight season the Pirates have won the home opener.
Much like in their win over Presbyterian last weekend, the Pirates jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Just 10 seconds into the contest, ECU was on top. Nicole LeGar won the opening draw and sprinted up field. She passed to Megan Pallozzi who wasted no time, ripping a shot that found the back of the net.
Megan Pallozzi finished with the game-high six points while LeGar finished with three goals and two assists. LeGar had a team-high six draw controls while Liz Blumthal forced four Wofford turnovers. Ashley Vernon made six stops to get the second win of her collegiate career, with Christina White relieving her for the final 4:56 of play.
Princeton 16, Temple 14
PHILADELPHIA – Temple's Riley McGowan scored a game-high five goals, but No. 6 Princeton used a late three-goal run to erase the Owls' second-half lead and take a 15-14 victory Saturday afternoon.
McGowan's fourth and fifth goals came 39 seconds apart in the second half to give Temple a 13-12 advantage with 6:35 remaining. But the Tigers answered with three goals in a span of 1:17 to reclaim the advantage, taking a 15:13 lead with 5:46 to play.
Bridget Whitaker struck for the Owls with 2:46 left to bring Temple back within one, and the Owls won the ensuing draw with a chance to tie it. But McGowan's bid for the equalizer hit the post and the Tigers were able to get the ground ball add an insurance goal against Temple's pressure defense.
Whitaker finished with three goals and an assist while Jen Rodzewich had a hat trick for the Owls, who fell to 1-2 o the year.
