Cincinnati, UConn and Wichita State all picked up American Athletic Conference men's basketball wins on Sunday (Feb. 16).

Cincinnati 70, ECU 67 (OT) - Box Score

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Keith Williams scored six of his 17 points in overtime and Cincinnati pulled out a 70-67 win over East Carolina on Sunday.

Williams, who missed a contested drive at the end of regulation, followed up a Mika Adams-Woods basket with a 3-pointer to put the Bearcats on top 66-61 midway through overtime. After an East Carolina free throw, Williams hit again.

Tristen Newton hit a jumper and JJ Miles, who forced OT with a 3 with 11 seconds in regulation, followed with a 3-pointer to pull ECU within 68-67. Adams-Woods made 1 of 2 free throws with 32 seconds to play. The Pirates missed a shot but got the ball back when the rebound was knocked out of bounds. However, Jayden Gardner lost the ball out of bounds on a drive to the basket.

Williams made 1 of 2 free throws with 3.9 seconds to play but Gardner's 3-point attempt was well short.

Neither team had a double-figures lead. The Bearcats had an 11-0 run early in the first half and led 30-27 at the break. East Carolina used an 11-0 run to lead by eight near the midpoint of the second half but Cincinnati immediately responded with 10 straight.

Tre Scott scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Bearcats (17-8, 10-3 American Athletic Conference), who have won seven of eight, including an 82-57 win over ECU. Chris Vogt and Jarron Cumberland added 13 points each and Adams-Woods had 10. It was the sixth OT game for Cincy this year, tying a school record.

Gardner led the Pirates (10-16, 4-9) with 15 points. Miles added 12 and Newton 11.

Wichita State 82, Tulane 57 - Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- Dexter Dennis scored a career-high 21 points with a game-high nine rebounds and Tyson Etienne added 20 points as Wichita State beat Tulane 82-57 on Sunday.

Dennis hit 8 of 10 shots, including 4 of 6 on 3-pointers, while Etienne shot 7 of 9, including 6 of 8 from the arc. The Shockers made 13 of 24 3-point tries for 54%, better than the 48% they shot overall and nearly matching the 55% they shot at the free-throw line (11 of 20).

Jaime Echenique added 10 points for Wichita State (19-6, 7-5 American Athletic Conference) while Jamarius Burton added seven assists to go with nine assists.

The Shockers' 30-point halftime lead (50-20) tied for the fifth-largest in program history.

Christion Thompson had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Green Wave (10-15, 2-11), who have now lost nine consecutive games. Jordan Walker added 14 points. Teshaun Hightower had 10 points. The Green Wave shot 34.5 percent and made only 2 of 18 from the 3-point line.

UConn 64, Memphis 61 - Box Score

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Coach Dan Hurley fought back tears as he described the high price his UConn Huskies paid during Sunday's win over Memphis.

Christian Vital scored 18 of his 23 points in the second half as Connecticut overcame what appeared to be a serious leg injury to forward Akok Akok to beat Memphis 64-61.

“It was a big win, obviously,” Hurley said. “But there's no joy in it when something like that happens in the first minute. Sports are brutal sometimes. Life is brutal sometimes.”

James Bouknight added 17 points for Connecticut (14-11, 5-7 American), which has won three of its last four.

Vital and Bouknight combined to score 29 of the Huskies 39 second half points.

“I think that we're turning that corner,” said Vital. “Guys are believing with each game that we are starting to win.”

Precious Achiuwa and Tyler Harris each had 16 points for Memphis (17-8, 6-6), which led for more than 25 minutes in the game, but could not put UConn away. Achiuwa also pulled down 13 rebounds, but hit just seven of his 22 shots.

The teams were tied at 25 at halftime and Memphis scored the first five points of the second half.

A 3-pointer by Vital from the right baseline tied the score at 41 midway through the half, and his two foul shots with just over five minutes left gave the Huskies a 49-47 lead.

UConn didn't trail again.

A 3-pointer by Harris with two seconds left pulled the Tigers within a point at 62-61.

But Vital sank two free throws and Alex Lomax missed a desperation heave from beyond half court at the buzzer.

UConn lost Akok 58 seconds into the game when he went down with what the school said appears to be a torn left Achilles tendon after blocking a shot for the 66th time this season.

The 6-foot-9 freshman could not put any weight on the leg as he was helped off the court and returned to the bench wearing a medical boot.

“We just won this game for him,” Bouknight said. “He's tough. He's a warrior and he's going to be good. I can't wait for him to get back.”

With Akok out of the game, Memphis ran out to a 10-4 lead. They led 20-13 with just over seven minutes left in the half, but scored just five more points before intermission.

Memphis has lost three straight, including a heartbreaking 92-86 setback in overtime at Cincinnati on Thursday.

“I like the direction we're heading, we've just got to learn to finish games,” Memphis coach Penny Hardaway said.

Villanova 76, Temple 56 - Box Score

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Faced with a halftime deficit, Collin Gillespie and Villanova didn’t panic.

Gillespie scored a season-high 29 points to lead No. 15 Villanova to a 76-56 comeback victory over Philadelphia rival Temple on Sunday.

Jermaine Samuels added 13 points and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl had 10 for Villanova (19-6), which won its seventh straight game over Temple while finishing 4-0 in the Big 5.

The Wildcats, hurt by early foul trouble to starters Justin Moore and Robinson-Earl, trailed by four points at halftime. But they took over after the break, using a game-changing 20-2 run over the first 5 minutes, 46 seconds of the second half to take control.

“We were good, we were positive, we knew we had to make adjustments and stick to our game plan,” Gillespie said of the feeling at the break. “In the second half we made stops at the defensive end, and it gave us easy opportunities at offensive end.”

Villanova made 7 of 10 shots, including 6 of 8 3-pointers, during the stretch while Temple was 1 of 8 from the field, 0 for 3 from beyond the arc and committed five turnovers.

“Great second half,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “We just made shots. When that happens, any team is tough to beat. It started with our defensive effort in second half and that led to making shots. That together was the difference.”

Quinton Rose scored 22 points and Nate Pierre-Louis had 16 for Temple (13-12).

Temple was in good position to pull off the upset after the opening 20 minutes.

But Villanova quickly erased a four-point halftime deficit by hitting three 3-pointers early in the second half, the last by Gillespie with 17:41 remaining put Villanova up 35-30.

And the Wildcats continued to pour it on.

Moore's 3-pointer with 14:14 left gave Villanova a 46-32 lead.

Temple got within seven at 49-42 on Rose’s drive with 10 minutes left, but never got closer.
