No. RV UCF 10, No. 12 Tennessee 1 (5) (USF Invitational, Tampa, Florida)
No. RV UCF scored the defining win of the season thus far in The American in its first game of the weekend on Friday at the USF Invitational in Tampa. The Knights scored nine runs in a dominant third inning to run-rule No. 12 Tennessee 10-1 in five innings at the USF Softball Stadium.
The win by UCF represented the third ranked win by an American squad in 2020, after USF picked up wins against No. 17/19 Texas Tech and No. 15 Georgia last weekend. The 10-1 score marked the largest UCF margin of victory over a top 25 team in program history, surpassing an 8-1 win over the then No. 5 ranked Alabama on Feb. 12, 2016.
Jady Cody went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and three runs scored for UCF, while Jazmine Esparza chipped in a bases-clearing three-run double. Shannon Doherty added two hits and a solo home run for the Knights attack.
Alea White allowed one earned run on five hits in a complete game outing, striking out five Tennessee batters.
No. RV USF 7, FIU 1 (USF Invitational, Tampa, Florida)
Georgina Corrick and Vivian Ponn spun a combined no-hitter for No. RV USF in a 7-1 win over FIU on Friday at the USF Invitational at USF Softball Stadium. It was the third combined no-hitter in American history, joining Mackenzie Audas and Mackenzie Huhn of UCF in 2014 (March 18 against Iona) and Katie Koshes and Kayla Doty of UConn in 2017 (March 29 against Bryant).
Corrick struck out 11 batters over six otherwise spotless innings, allowing one earned run on 80 pitches. Ponn yielded a lone walk in the seventh inning for the Knights.
Bethaney Keen’s three-run home run in the bottom of the third was the offensive difference for USF, and Brooke Hartman finished with two hits and a pair of RBI. AnaMarie Bruni chipped in two hits and scored two runs.
Houston 8, Syracuse 0 (5)
Houston 4, Louisiana Tech 0 (Houston Challenge, Houston, Texas)
Stellar pitching carried the day for Houston on Friday as the Cougars blanked Syracuse 8-0 in five innings and Louisiana Tech 4-0 at the Houston Challenge.
Logan Hulon threw a one-hit shutout against Syracuse in the day’s first game, walking four while adding five strikeouts to her cause. Sarah Queen went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI for Houston, and Becca Schulte homered and drove in three runs against the Orange.
McKenna Fryar surrendered two hits in a complete game shutout later in the day, striking out two Louisiana Tech hitters. Queen chipped in three more hits and an RBI and Charese Wyatt logged two hits and a pair of runs.
