USF Bests Tulane 64-50 To Reach Women’s Basketball Championship Semifinals

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – No. 4 seed USF will return once more to the semifinal round of the American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship thanks to a 64-50 quarterfinal win over No. 5 seed Tulane on Saturday at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The Bulls are scheduled to play No. 1 seed UConn on Sunday at 4 p.m. (ET) on ESPN2.
 
Sydni Harvey logged a career high with 28 points on 7-of-14 shooting (10-of-12 from the free-throw line) and added four rebounds for USF. Elena Tsineke tallied 14 points and a pair of assists for the Bulls, and Bethy Mununga gathered in a game-high 14 rebounds. Arsula Clark shined for Tulane with 25 points, four rebounds and two steals, and Krystal Freeman turned in 10 points and seven boards for the Green Wave.
 
Tulane raced out to a 10-3 lead after the first 3:30 of the ballgame thanks to a 3-for-5 shooting start from the field what was capped by a Freeman 3-pointer. USF clawed back on a 7-0 run that featured buckets from Harvey and Mununga to close the gap to just one at 12-11. The Bulls claimed their first lead of the day when Elisa Pinzan drove the baseline and hit a reverse layup (13-12). USF connected on four of its final five shots of the first quarter, but Tulane ended the period in front 18-15. The Bulls held Tulane scoreless for more than a four-minute stretch in the second frame but were only able to draw within two at 20-18. Harvey vaulted USF ahead at the 1:47 mark of the second quarter with a made three (25-24), and late baskets from Tsineke and Tamara Henshaw sent the Bulls to the break in the lead 29-26.
 
USF raced toward the third quarter media timeout after a made jumper from Tsineke (41-35), but Clark came back at the other end with a traditional 3-point play to trim the Tulane deficit to 41-38. The Bulls opened a nine-point lead at the 3:26 mark (47-38) after a 6-0 run, but Tulane whittled the deficit back down to six with three Clark free throws. USF held Tulane without a field goal for nearly the final five minutes of the third quarter, but a Clark bank shot in the final 10 seconds kept the Green Wave within six points (51-45). USF pushed forward late in the fourth quarter when Mununga gathered in an offensive rebound and laid the ball in for a 10-point Bulls lead (56-46).
