PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The American Athletic Conference announced its weekly baseball honors for March 9.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alec Burleson, Jr., LHP/UTL, ECU
Burleson hit .667 (10-for-15) with seven runs scored, along with a home run and four runs driven in as ECU went 4-0 last week, including a sweep over Charlotte. The junior also had an OPS of 1.565. The junior hit 3-for-3 on Friday night (March 6) as he also picked up the win on the mound.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Evan Shawver, So., LHP, Cincinnati
Shawver tossed a gem against Eastern Michigan, giving up only one hit and one run in 8.2 innings of work, while striking out 12 in the Bearcats’ 8-1 win on Saturday (March 7).
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Dalton Wingo, Jr., OF, UCF
Wingo hit .563 for the week as UCF won four games, including a sweep of Butler. The junior scored two runs, hit a home run, drove in two runs and had an OPS of 1.376.
Jeremy Johnson, R-Sr., OF, Cincinnati
Johnson aided the Bearcats to a sweep of Eastern Michigan by hitting 7-for-11 (.636) for the week, scoring three runs while driving in seven with an OPS of 1.896.
Derrick Cherry, So., RHP, Houston
Cherry had two long saves while not allowing a run in 6.1 innings for the Cougars. In a 6-4 win over Rice, the sophomore came in and pitched 4.0 innings, while he shut the door on No. 25 Arizona with 2.1 innings of work.
Danny Denz, Sr., LHP, Memphis
Denz had a strong outing with 11 strikeouts and only one hit allowed in 6.0 innings as the Tigers shutout UNCW, 4-0, on Friday (March 6) as part of a series win.
Ty Johnson, R-Sr., OF, Tulane
Johnson hit .500 (7-14) in four wins for the Green Wave, while adding four extra base hits and six runs driven in. The redshirt-senior hit safely in all four games, while also scoring eight runs with at least one in every contest.
