Five from The American Selected in the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft

06.11.20

PROVIDENCE, R.I.— Five players from the American Athletic Conference were selected in the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft, which concluded Thursday with the final four rounds.

With five selections in the five-round draft, which was reduced from 40 rounds this year, The American has had five or more picks in the first five rounds of the MLB draft in three consecutive years.

Hudson Haskin, an outfielder from Tulane, was the first player from The American off the board, going in the second round (39th pick overall) to the Baltimore Orioles. Haskin hit .363 with 11 home runs and 66 RBI in two seasons for the Green Wave. He was a 2019 Baseball America All-America Second Team selection and was honored as a 2019 Freshman All-American by three outlets. This is the second straight year Tulane has had The American’s first selection in the Major League Baseball Draft, after Kody Hoese was selected in the first round (25th overall) in 2019 by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Next off the board was Alec Burleson, an outfielder/pitcher from East Carolina who was a second-round compensation pick by the St. Louis Cardinals, at 70th overall. Burleson was selected as a first-team All-American by five different outlets in 2019 and was a 2020 Collegiate Baseball All-American First Team honoree. He hit .341 with 12 home runs and 91 runs driven in in 130 career games for the Pirates. IF BEFORE 135… Burleson becomes the highest draft pick for East Carolina since the Pirates joined The American in 2014. ECU’s previous highest pick since joining the conference was Jake Agnos (4th round, 135th overall) in 2019.

USF right-handed pitcher Carson Ragsdale was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fourth round with the 116th overall pick. Ragsdale returned in grand style in 2020 after missing the 2019 campaign with Tommy John surgery. He made four starts, earning a 1-0 record with a 2.84 ERA, while striking out 37 batters in just 19.0 innings of work.

Joey Wiemer, an outfielder from Cincinnati, was selected five picks later, going to the Milwaukee Brewers in the fourth round with the 121st overall pick. Wiemer hit .264 with 12 home runs and 62 RBI in 122 career games for the Bearcats. On the base paths, he stole 35 bases, including 21 in 2019.

The American’s final pick of the draft was UCF relief pitcher Jeff Hakanson, who was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth round with the 155th overall pick. Hakanson, who was the only relief pitcher honored on the 2020 Collegiate Baseball All-America First Team, earned six saves in seven appearances for the Knights, striking out 20 batters in just 8.1 innings of work. The junior only allowed one hit and one walk for the season.
