PROVIDENCE, R.I.— Four baseball and softball student-athletes from the American Athletic Conference have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday (June 11).
East Carolina baseball junior Alec Burleson, Memphis baseball senior Alec Trela, USF softball junior Georgina Corrick and Tulane baseball senior Grant Mathews have been named First-Team Academic All-Americans. The American had the most first-team selections of any conference on the baseball side.
Burleson, also a Third-Team Academic All-American in 2019, earned 2020 Collegiate Baseball All-America accolades and five First-Team All-America honors in 2019. At the plate, he hit .341 with 12 home runs and 91 RBI, while striking out 139 batters on the mound in three seasons for the Pirates. Burleson holds 3.93 cumulative GPA while majoring in business management.
Trela, a Third-Team Academic All-American in 2019, hit 21 home runs and drove in 113 runs in 186 career games for the Tigers. He held a 3.97 cumulative GPA at Memphis, majoring in biomedical engineering.
Corrick earned 2019 NFCA All-America Second Team accolades and is a two-time American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year. Corrick is 52-18 from the circle and has recorded 551 strikeouts through three seasons for the Bulls. She has a cumulative GPA of 3.69 while majoring in marine biology.
Mathews has hit .333 with 18 home runs and has driven in 96 runs in 113 games for the Green Wave. He holds a 4.00 cumulative GPA while working towards a degree in homeland security studies.
