IRVING, Texas – SMU men’s golfer Ollie Osborne became the second American Athletic Conference representative to reach the final of a United States Amateur Championship, dropping a heartbreaking 1-up decision to Georgia Tech’s Tyler Strafaci on Sunday in the championship match of the 120th U.S. Amateur at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Oregon. Both players combined for an impressive 25 birdies and one eagle over the course of the 36-hole match play final in one of the most exciting finishes in tournament history.
Osborne joined former SMU standout and 2015 champion Bryson DeChambeau as U.S. Amateur finalists from The American over the past six seasons. Along with the title of U.S. Amateur runner-up, Osborne earned qualification into the fields of both the 2021 Masters at Augusta National Golf Club (Augusta, Georgia) and the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Couse (San Diego, California).
Osborne opened the 36-hole stroke play portion of the tournament with a 5-over score of 77 on the Bandon Dunes course, bouncing back at Bandon Trails the following day with 10 birdies as part of a 7-under-par 64 to tie for 23rd place. As the No. 27 seed in match play, Osborne dispatched of No. 38 William Walker III (1-up), No. 59 Noah Norton (2-and-1), No. 22 Carson Lundell (7-and-5), No. 62 Cameron Sisk (2-and-1) and No. 58 Matthew Sharpstene (4-and-2) on his way to the championship match.
