SMU Golf Alum Bryson DeChambeau Wins 120th United States Open

09.20.20

IRVING, Texas – Former SMU men’s golfer Bryson DeChambeau completed a historic weekend and emerged as the champion of the 120th United States Open, closing with a six-stroke victory on Sunday at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.

DeChambeau’s 72-hole score of 6-under-par (69-68-70-67=274) was the lowest in both total strokes and in relation to par by any player in the six U.S. Opens ever held at Winged Foot, and he was the lone player in the 156-man field to finish under par for the week. Only 1984 champion Fuzzy Zoeller (276, -4), who ultimately won an 18-hole playoff by eight shots (67-75) over Greg Norman, had previously completed stroke play at par or better to win a U.S. Open at Winged Foot. DeChambeau added the distinction of being the only player to ever shoot par or better in all four rounds of a U.S. Open at Winged Foot.

DeChambeau, the winner of the 2014 American Athletic Conference Championship, the 2015 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship and the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship, secured his first career professional major victory and his seventh overall win since joining the PGA Tour in 2016. He also became the 12th player to ever double as a U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open champion since both tournaments were founded in 1895, and only the sixth since World War II alongside Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler, Jack Nicklaus, Jerry Pate and Tiger Woods. Nicklaus and Woods had only previously completed the trifecta of an NCAA title, a U.S. Amateur title and a U.S. Open victory.

After entering the final round trailing by two shots, DeChambeau earned a share of the lead with a birdie on the 457-yard fourth hole. He responded from a bogey at the eighth by rolling in an eagle at the par-5 ninth hole, pouring in a three to make the turn with a 2-under 33. A birdie at the 365-yard 11th hole and seven straight pars down the stretch iced the closing 3-under-par round of 67 for DeChambeau.
