SMU Tops Texas State In 2020 Opener

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Quarterback Shane Buechele threw for 367 yards and a touchdown and running back TJ McDaniel topped the 100-yard mark against Texas State for the second time in as many years as SMU took a 31-24 decision against the Bobcats Friday evening at Bobcat Stadium.



Buechele, who led the American Athletic Conference in passing last season with 302.2 yards per game, broke a 21-21 tie with a 51-yard bomb to Reggie Roberson Jr. with 3:26 left in the third quarter to give the Mustangs the lead for good. 

Chris Naggar added a 32-yard field goal with 2:20 left in the fourth quarter to give SMU a 10-point cushion before the Bobcats got back within seven with a field goal in the final minute.

Running back Ulysses Bentley IV rushed for 52 yards and the first two touchdowns of his career, while McDaniel, who ran for 159 yards and three TDs against Texas State last year, had 130 yards and a score on 27 carries Friday.

Wideout Rashee Rice had five catches for 101 yards, while Roberson had six catches for 99 yards and the go-ahead TD.

SMU gained 544 yards of offense and withstood three turnovers and 63 yards in penalties to get the win its sixth straight regular-season nonconference game.

The Mustangs were slated to face TCU next week, but that game was postponed due to COVID-19 concers with the Horned Frogs. SMU's next game will be Sept. 19 at North Texas.
