No. 8/5 Tulsa 3, Temple 2

For the first time since joining The American in 2014, Tulsa secured the regular-season conference silverware with a gritty 3-2 win on the road at Temple. The No. 8/5 Golden Hurricane clinched the top spot in the league table and will host the 2021 American Men’s Soccer Championship at Hurricane Stadium on Nov. 10 and 13.

The Golden Hurricane are in search of their fourth American tournament title after sweeping the postseason event between 2014 and 2016. Tulsa most recently claimed a regular-season crown as a member of Conference USA in 2009.

Austen Schweinert opened the scoring for Tulsa at 16:50 from Chase Bromstedt to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Ben Barkley made it a 2-0 advantage just before halftime, scoring at 42:50 for the two-goal lead for the Golden Hurricane.

Temple did not back down, with Andrew Burkhardt (62:46) and Nigel Griffith (65:48) finding the back of the net on the team’s first two official shots on goal of the night to tie the contest at 2-2. Taka Wyatt pushed Tulsa back in front almost immediately, scoring at 67:53 for the 3-2 winning margin.

SMU 5, UCF (RV) 0

SMU turned in a dominant performance in Orlando against UCF, moving within two points of the second seed with a 5-0 shutout victory. The Mustangs outshot the Knights 15-7, including an impressive 8-1 in shots on goal during the match.

Skage Simonsen opened his 2021 goal account in a big way, notching a hat trick for SMU in the win. Simonsen found the back of the net at 22:29, 59:13 and 83:51 to power the Mustang attack. Wyatt Priest notched a goal at 36:50 and Gabriel Costa added an unassisted tally at 54:12 to provide insurance for SMU.

South Florida 0, Memphis 0 (2OT)

South Florida and Memphis battled to a scoreless draw to keep both teams in contention for a bid into the American Men’s Soccer Championship. The Bulls held the edge in both total shots (17-10) and shots on goal (8-4), but the Tigers managed nine corner kicks to just four for USF.

Colin Welsh shined in the Memphis goal with eight saves in the shutout, including six in the second half and overtime periods. USF’s Kazuna Takase made four saves of his own to keep Memphis out of the goal column.
