Memphis Becomes Bowl Eligible With 33-28 Win Against Tulane

11.27.21

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Seth Henigan threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns and Memphis gained bowl eligibility for the eighth straight season with a 33-28 win against Tulane Saturday night at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers (6-6) used a pair of touchdowns early in the fourth quarter to take the lead for good as Asa Martin's 1-yard touchdown run gave Memphis a 26-21 advantage before Henigan found Eddie Lewis for a 25-yard score with 13:31 left to make it 33-21.

Tulane (2-10) rode a 264-yard, two-touchdown effort from Tyjae Spears to stay in it, and the Green Wave closed to within five when Duece Watts made a tough catch in the end zone with 1:57 left. But Memphis recovered the onside kick to deny Tulane's late charge.

Sean Dykes had seven receptions for 89 yards for the Tigers, while JJ Russell had 10 tackles.

Memphis had stood at 5-4 through nine games, but back-to-back losses made Saturday's game a do-or-die affair for bowl eligibility. The Tigers have played in a bowl each year since the 2014 season.
