Oxford, Miss. – After picking up a game one win on Friday night, the UCF baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against No. 1 Ole Miss to clinch the series victory over the top-ranked program.
Game 1
The Rebels offense jumped out to an early lead in the second inning, tagging starting pitcher Hunter Patteson for three runs on a pair of extra base hits. Patteson settled back into a groove and would finish his day with 5.0 IP, seven strikeouts and just the three runs allowed.
The Knights would answer and pull within a run in the fifth inning thanks to a two out, two RBI double from freshman John Montes. Ben McCabe gave the Knights their first lead of the day with a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning.
Ole Miss responded with a bottom of the ninth solo shot to pull within one, before stringing together a couple hits and taking advantage of a defensive error to walk off game one.
Game 2
The Knights bounced back in a big way in the series rubber match, as AJ Jones set the tone on the mound tossing 6.0 IP, fanning 10 Ole Miss batters, and allowing just one earned run.
The UCF offense broke out the bats in a big way, as six Knights earned a hit in the contest. Sophomore Ben McCabe led the squad, going 3-for-4 with a double, home run, two RBI and four runs scored.
The Black & Gold put up a single run in four innings, before breaking it open with a three-run eighth inning. McCabe got the scoring started, driving in a pair on his double and was then driven in by first year freshman Alex Freeland.
Ole Miss would reclaim a single run in their half of the eighth, scoring a run on a bases-loaded double play. First year freshman Zack Bennett finished the day with 3.0 IP, four Ks, and allowing just one run.
Houston 14, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 1 -

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of Houston established a new single-game home run record, crushing eight homers while evening the series in a 14-1 drubbing of A&M-Corpus Christi at Whataburger Field on Saturday night at Whataburger Field.
The Cougars (5-1) bested their previous mark of seven, set against Cincinnati on May 2, 1999. Junior Steven Rivas and freshman Will Pendergrass contributed two homers each. The long balls were the first for Pendergrass while Rivas upped his season total to six in as many contests.
Six Cougars connected for a home run including sophomore Brad Burckel who swatted a leadoff homer over the left field fence. Sophomore Brandon Uhse, senior Tyler Bielamowicz and freshman Samuel Benjamin added one each. The homer was the first of Benjamin's collegiate career.
The home run barrage came four days after Houston clubbed five homers against the Islanders (4-2) at Schroeder Park. The Cougars, who have now totaled 18 on the season, hit at least one homer in each of the first five innings. Houston has scored double-digit runs in five of its last five contests.
Houston right-hander Ben Sears (1-0) picked up his first victory, holding A&M-Corpus Christi to one run on four hits in 7.0 inning. Offensively, the Cougars posted 13 hits and drew 11 walks.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The University of Cincinnati baseball suffered its third-straight, walk-off loss, dropping the opening game of a Saturday doubleheader to Western Kentucky, 5-4, at Nick Denes Field.
Cincinnati (0-5) gave up the go-ahead run on a one-out, sacrifice fly by Davis Sims which scored pinch runner Ty Crittenberger as the Hilltoppers (3-3) dealt the Bearcats a heartbreaker for the second-straight game.
Drake Batcho (0-1) took the loss for the Bearcats while WKU's Mason Vineyard (1-0) picked up the win.
UC had hopped out to an early 3-0 lead in the fourth and once again rode a strong opening stint from one of its starters. LHP Dean McCarthy was nearly flawless in the first 6.2 innings, scattering five hits and striking out five. WKU scored four runs with two outs in the seventh, including a three-run home run by Ray Zuberer III. McCarthy ended up with a no decision, going 6.2 innings giving up four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Game 2
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The University of Cincinnati baseball picked up its first win of the season with an 11-3 win in game two of a Saturday twin bill against Western Kentucky at Nick Denes Field.
Cincinnati (1-5) scored four runs in the second, one in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh and ninth to notch a season-best mark on the scoreboard in the young season.
Garrett Schoenle (1-0) picked up the win while WKU's Ryan O'Connell (0-2) took the loss. Schoenle went 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and a walk. A trio of relievers, Jose Guzman, Jalen Wade and Aiden Bradbury, gave up one hit of the final four innings of shutout ball, fanning seven.
Memphis 11, Grambling State 3 (7 innings) -

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Scheduled for a Saturday doubleheader, the Memphis Tigers and Grambling State Tigers only got one game in before the skies opened up and canceled the back half of the twin bill. In the seven-inning matchup that the teams completed, Memphis tallied four home runs in an 11-3 runaway win. In the victory, all nine Memphis starters recorded at least one RBI while seven tallied at least one hit.
For the second consecutive game, Memphis (3-0) scored 11 runs in the win over Grambling State (0-2). Much like Friday night, Memphis trailed early, as the visitors struck in the opening inning. Chris Durham (ND) gave up singles to each of the first two batters of the game, both of whom scored. Durham settled in and allowed just three runs over 4.2 innings.
Memphis rattled Jason Alvarez (L, 0-1), who lasted just two innings. Alvarez gave up three runs on two hits in the first inning, a frame that also included two hit batters and a walk. Taylor Howell and Max Hildreth each picked up an RBI in the inning as Memphis led 3-2 after the first.
The home team extended the lead and made it late very quickly for Grambling State with four runs in the second inning. Jaylen Wilbon tallied Memphis' first home run of the night, a two-run blast off of Alvarez. Memphis added two more in the frame and led 7-2 after two innings.
USF 9, Florida A&M 4 -

TAMPA – The USF Bulls (3-3) scored in bunches on Saturday afternoon, putting up crooked numbers in the first and fifth frames, to win their third straight ballgame over Florida A&M (0-7) at USF Baseball Stadium, 9-4.
FAMU took an early two-run lead in the top of the first inning, but just as was the case in Friday's opener, the Bulls answered in a hurry.
Drew Brutcher (Lakeland) and Matt Ruiz (Hialeah) each walked to begin the bottom of the frame, and Riley Hogan (Orlando) unloaded on his second longball in two days to give the Bulls a 3-2 advantage. Carmine Lane (Lake Placid) extended the lead with a two-out solo homer.
The Rattlers chipped away at their deficit with a solo home run in the fourth and an unearned run in the fifth to knot the score at 4-4 before the USF bats took over again.
The Bulls batted around in the fifth frame, retaking the lead on a sacrifice fly by Roberto Pena (Caracas, Venezuela). Lane added an RBI-single, Julio Cortez (Weston) followed with a two-run single and Dontae Mitchell (St. Petersburg) closed the inning with an RBI-single to make it a 9-4 affair.
Georgia Southern 10, No. 22 East Carolina 7 -

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern scored six runs in the fifth frame and held on for a 10-7 win over No. 22 East Carolina Saturday, Feb. 27 at J.I. Clements Stadium. With the win the Eagles improve to 2-4 on the year and tied the series at one-all, while the Pirates fall to 5-1.
Trailing 5-3 in the fifth inning, the Eagles sent 12 batters to the plate with two outs as the Pirates used four pitchers for a 9-5 advantage and never looked back. With two away, Jaylen Paden singled to left and Noah Ledford was hit by a pitch. After ECU brought in C.J. Mayhue to pitch, Christian Avant singled up the middles scoring Paden. Jason Swan doubled to left-center plating Ledford and Austin Thompson blasted a three-run homer down the left field line clearing the bases. The Eagles loaded the bases with a walk, single and hit by pitch for Mason McWhorter, who was also plunked at the dish allowing JP Tighe to score.
David Johnson (1-0) earned the win in relief allowing one run (earned) on two hits with four strikeouts in two innings. Ben Johnson notched his first save of the year despite giving up one run (earned) on two hits with one punch out. Starter Chase Dollander worked four innings where he allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts. The Eagles also got bullpen outings from Jacob Parker (0.2 IP, 4 Hs, 3 Rs, 3 ERs, 1 K) and Jay Thompson (0.1 IP).
Mayhue (0-1) suffered his first collegiate loss surrendering four runs (all earned) on four hits and a walk without recording an out. Jake Kuchmaner gave up five runs (all earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts in 4.2 frames. ECU used four more arms in relief getting outings from Skylar Brooks (0.0 IP), Nick Logusch (1.1 IP, 1 H, 3 Ks), Nate Nabholz (0.2 IP, 2 BBs, 1 K) and Trystan Kimmel (1.1 IP, 2 Hs, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K).

WICHITA, Kan. – The SIUE Cougars scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally and defeat the Wichita State University baseball team, 9-7, Saturday, Feb. 27, at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field.
Junior Garrett Kocis went 3-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs, while Paxton Wallace added a trio of hits, including a double, and Chuck Ingram doubled twice, pacing the Shockers at the plate. Corrigan Bartlett also homered in the game.
Sophomore reliever Aaron Haase (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound after giving up three earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts in two innings.
Raul Elguezabal drove in three runs and hit what ended up being the game-winning home run in the ninth to pace the Cougars.
No. 5 Mississippi State 9, Tulane 5 -

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Tulane University baseball team took a 5-3 lead into the bottom half of the ninth inning, but were unable to hang on, as it fell 9-5 to the No. 5-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at Dudy Noble Stadium.
Tulane had kept the Bulldogs' offense in check for most of the game, holding MSU to three runs and six hits over the first eight innings of the game. In the bottom of the ninth, MSU's offense came alive, as it plated six runs on four hits, including a walk-off grand slam.
