Sophia Rohling had a career-high 14 kills and hit a career-best .609 helping the Wichita State University volleyball team earn a 3-0 sweep over the University of North Texas Mean Green on Thursday, Feb. 4, inside Charles Koch Arena. The set scores were 25-18, 25-19 and 25-12.
Wichita State (4-0) is scheduled to wrap up its two-game set with the Mean Green (0-1) Friday, Feb. 5, at 1 p.m.
Rohling, a sophomore from Thayer, Kan., had 14 kills on 23 attempts with no errors in three sets, surpassing her previous career-best of 13 kills. Megan Taflinger added nine kills, while Kayce Litzau added a team-best 18 assists and three service aces.
Sinalauli'i Uluave (13 digs), Emma Wright (three blocks) and Brooke Smith (three blocks) rounded out the Wichita State leaders in the contest.
The Shockers held UNT to .000 hitting while hitting .286 for the match. WSU also posted advantages in kills (43-24), assists (40-21), aces (6-4), digs (60-46) and blocks (6-1).
SMU 3, UTSA 0
SMU beat UTSA 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-12) in the third match of the program's 25th season. The Mustangs had big offensive nights from Jadyn Bauss and Hannah Jacobs who finished with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. SMU concluded the match hitting .363 with only 10 errors.
The Mustangs (3-0) jumped out to an early start in the game, but UTSA eventually rallied back to tie the first set up at 16. Bauss converted on her next three attacks to boost the Mustangs to the opening lead. SMU outdueled UTSA with its explosive hitting percentage, winning that category .472 to .300 in the first set.
UTSA stayed toe-to-toe with SMU in the second set not allowing the Mustangs to pull away. Midway through the second set Rachel Woulfe had two significant kills to grow the SMU lead to 15-9. Down the stretch the Roadrunners hurt themselves with timely errors and eventually finished with a 0.91 hitting percentage in this set. SMU defense came up big on defense with five blocks in the second. The Mustangs took all the momentum and rolled in the third set to defend its home court.
Bauss hit double figures with 13 digs to add to her 13 kills. Makayla Miller also had a big night defensively with 13 digs. Miller and Bria' Merchant both were flawless taking a majority of the digs as they both were 17/17 on receptions. Lily Heim continued her excellence as the setter dishing out 40 assists on the evening.
