IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s men’s and women's indoor track & field honors, for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 7.
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Joseph Holthusen * Jr. * Wichita State
Holthusen turned in one of the nation’s top times in the 60-meter hurdles in racing to an event win during the Herm Wilson Invitational on Feb. 4-5, blazing through the finish line in 7.79. Holthusen ranked first at the top of The American standings and sixth in the NCAA as of Feb. 9.
Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Christyan Sampy * So. * Houston
Sampy picked up the event win in the pole vault during the Texas A&M Charlie Thomas Invitational on Feb. 6, clearing a top mark of 5.21m (17-1.00) in the victory. Sampy, The American leader in the pole vault this season, also ranked 21st nationally as of Feb. 9.
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Caisja Chandler * Jr. * Cincinnati
Chandler won women’s track athlete of the week for the second straight time after a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash at the South Carolina Invitational on Feb. 5-6. Chandler’s time of 23.62 was the top time in The American this season and the 23rd-fastest in the NCAA as of Feb. 9.
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Malin Smith * Jr. * Cincinnati
Smith placed third in the shot put at the South Carolina Invitational on Feb. 5-6, posting a top mark of 16.17m (53-0.75). Smith’s throw led all competitors in The American and ranked 17th in NCAA Division I as of Feb. 9.
