USF Wins 2021 American Men’s Golf Championship, Bergstrom Fires 66 To Finish As Individual Medalist

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – Host USF completed the league double on Sunday by claiming both the team and individual titles in the final round of the 2021 American Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship at Southern Hills Plantation. The Bulls fired a three-day total of 270-292-285 to win by five shots at 847 (-17).
 
It was the fifth American team championship for USF in men’s golf, as the Bulls had swept the tournament from 2015-18. The team’s final score of 847 was the third-lowest in tournament history as the event made its debut at Southern Hills Plantation.
 
Albin Bergstrom became the fourth USF individual player to claim medalist honors, firing a 6-under 66 that featured six birdies and an eagle to win by three strokes at 11-under-par 205 (68-71-66). SMU’s Noah Goodwin (70-70-68), Wichita State’s Marcus Wochner (66-70-72) and Cincinnati’s Sam Jean (71-69-68) shared runner-up honors at 8-under-par 208.
 
USF completed the wire-to-wire team victory powered by Bergstrom’s 66 on Sunday, with Luke Gifford also throwing up a 69 to tie for eighth place at 214 (66-79-69, -2). Kyle Flexsenhar joined Goodwin in a tie for eighth place at 2-under 214 (66-73—75), and Sam Nicholson chipped in a tie for 19th place at 219 (70-74-75, +3). Run Youprayong shared 22nd place at 220 (70-74-76, +4).
 
SMU fired a third straight round under par as a squad, checking in solo second at 852 following a final round 279 (287-286-279, -12). Goodwin’s runner-up finish paced the Mustangs, with Nathan Petronzio in a tie for eighth place at 214 (72-71-71, -2). Ollie Osborne was solo 11th place with rounds of 72-72-71 to finish at 1-under-par (215). Mac Meissner turned in a final round 69 to tie for 15th place at 217 (75-73-69, +1) and Dawson Ovard shared 31st place with a score of 223 (73-75-75, +7).
 
Cincinnati made the largest team leap on the final day, gaining three spots on the leaderboard with a 13-under-par 275 to finish in solo third place (289-292-275=856, -8). Clay Amlung was right behind Jean in a tie for fifth place with a three-day score of 211 (71-73-67, -5). Joey McCarthy shared 19th place at 219 (74-75-70, +3) and Ty Gingerich claimed a piece of 22nd place at 220 (73-77-70, +4). Mason Lenhart rounded out the Bearcat players in 29th place at 222 (76-75-71, +6).
 
Wichita State dropped one spot to fourth place overall at 865 (297-279-289), while Memphis (285-292-292), UCF (288-293-288) and East Carolina (287-290-292) shared fifth place at 869. Temple finished eighth at 901 (296-302-303).
