IRVING, Texas – East Carolina and South Florida have been selected to compete as part of the 64-team field in the 2021 NCAA Baseball Championship.
Each regional field features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. All 16 regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, June 4-Monday, June 7. The winners of each regional will compete in eight super regionals, which are best-of-3 series and will take place the weekend of June 11-13. The eight winners from the super regionals will compete in the 2021 Men’s College World Series, which begins Saturday, June 19 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.
East Carolina was selected as the No. 13 overall seed and will host the Greenville Regional. It marked the third consecutive championship that the Pirates have hosted a Greenville regional. An American team has hosted a regional in each of the past four championships and five of the last six. Houston (2017) and 2015) and Louisville (2014) are the other American Athletic Conference teams to host a regional. In addition to hosting in 2018 and 2019, ECU hosted a regional at Clark-LeClair Stadium in 2009, and also hosted opening round regional tournaments on two occasions at different venues.
East Carolina (41-15) will be the top seed in the Greenville regional and will face-off against No. 4 seed Norfolk State Friday, June 4 at noon ET/11 a.m. CT on ESPN3. The second game of the regional will see No. 3 seed Maryland face No. 2 seed Charlotte at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT on ESPN3.
The Pirates won the American Athletic Conference regular season title and earned the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament. Connor Norby was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, while Gavin Williams was selected as the league’s Pitcher of the Year. ECU Head Coach Cliff Godwin was voted as Coach of the Year. It is the Pirates’ fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament since joining The American and 31
st overall regional.
South Florida (28-27) will be the No. 4 seed in the Gainesville regional and take on No. 15 overall seed Florida Friday, June 4 at noon ET/11 a.m. CT on SEC Network. The second game of the regional will be No. 3 seed South Alabama vs. No. 2 Miami at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT on ACC Network.
The Bulls automatically qualified for the NCAA Baseball Championship after winning the American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship with an 8-7 win against UCF in the final on Sunday, May 30. It is the Bulls’ fourth NCAA Tournament appearance since joining The American and 14
th appearance overall.
