05.09.21

IRVING, Texas – Three American Athletic Conference teams were among the 29 squads that were selected for the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship Sunday.

Florida, which won the American Athletic Conference Championship Saturday, earned the league's automatic bid and was tabbed as the No. 6 national seed. Temple and Vanderbilt were among the 14 at-large selections. The American ranked fourth among all conferences with three teams in the field, behind only the ACC (six), Big Ten (four) and CAA (four).

Florida was selected as one of the eight seeded teams that will host the first and second rounds of the tournament. The Gators will open tournament play Friday, against Southern Conference champion Mercer at 4 p.m. ET at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. The Gators will make their 10th appearance in the NCAA tournament and reached the semifinal round of the tournament in 2012.

Vanderbilt will play in the other first-round game in Gainesville Friday as the Commodores face Atlantic Sun champion Jacksonville at 6:30 p.m. The Commodores are making their seventh NCAA tournament appearance and their first since the 2010 season. Vanderbilt advanced to the national semifinals in 2004.

Temple, which reached the championship game of the American Athletic Conference tournament, begins its NCAA tournament run Friday when it faces Atlantic-10 champion Massachusetts at 4 p.m. ET at Alumni Stadium on the campus of Boston College. A win by the Owls would send Temple to a second-round contest against either Boston College or Fairfield. Temple is making its 17th appearance in the NCAA tournament and is in the field for the first time since 2008. The Owls won NCAA titles in 1984 and 1988.

Four quarterfinal games will be played Saturday, May 22, or Sunday, May 23. These preliminary-round games will be played on the campuses of competing institutions.

The winners of the four quarterfinal games will advance to the national semifinals hosted by Towson University at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Maryland. The semifinal games will be shown live on ESPNU at noon and 2 p.m. ET, Friday, May 28. The championship game will air live on ESPNU Sunday, May 30, at noon.
