EUGENE, Ore. – Tulsa’s Patrick Dever claimed the national championship in the men’s 10000-meter run on the opening day of competition on Wednesday at the 2021 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field. An additional five American Athletic Conference athletes from Houston punched their tickets to finals heats that are scheduled for Friday evening.
Dever established a meet record in the men’s 10K with a time of 27:41.87, shattering the previous national championship mark established by Texas-El Paso’s Suleiman Nyambui (28:01.30) in 1979. Dever gathered the second men’s 10K national title for Tulsa since the Golden Hurricane joined The American, alongside Marc Scott in 2017. American conference champion Aaron Bienenfeld claimed honorable mention All-America status in 17th place with a time of 28:33.05.
The Houston men’s 4x100-meter relay team of Jordan Booker, Travis Collins, Christian Hamberlin and Shaun Maswanganyi finished third in the preliminary heats with a time of 38.84 to advance to Friday’s event final. The Cougars were the second team to the finish line in heat one and will be among the nine teams looking to capture the national championship in the event.
Maswanganyi clinched berths in both the men’s 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash finals as well, placing fourth in the 100 dash with a time of 10.14 and third in the 200 dash at 20.18. Collins captured second-team All-America accolades with a 13th-place showing in the 100 dash (10.25) and 16th-place in the 200 dash (20.77). Booker claimed second-team All-America in the 200 dash with a time of 20.71 to finish 13th, and Hamberlin checked in 20th in the 200 dash with a time of 20.89.
Fellow Houston teammate Quivell Jordan punched his ticket into the finals of the men’s 400-meter hurdles, clinching the ninth and final championship slot with a time of 50.17. South Florida’s Duncan Agyemang finished 24th in the 400 hurdles with a prelim time of 52.56 to close the year as an honorable mention All-American.
