GREENVILLE, N.C. – A flurry of second-half goals propelled the East Carolina soccer team to a 4-0 win over visiting VMI on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates improve to 1-1-0 on the season while the Keydets fall to 0-2-0.
East Carolina dominated everywhere in the first half except on the scoresheet. The Pirates held a whopping 69% of the possession in the opening 45 minutes and outshot VMI 6-1. Tori Riggs nearly scored for the Pirates just 45 seconds into the match, directing a header just wide of the VMI goalpost. Haley McWhirter had a pair of shots saved by VMI goalkeeper Jillian Hall and Abby Sowa put a header of her own just over the crossbar. However, East Carolina could not get the breakthrough and went into the locker room at halftime still tied at 0-0.
In the second half, the Pirates continued to apply pressure, but it was VMI who nearly broke the tie first. A corner kick in the 50th minute found Sam Fee who put a header just over the crossbar.
The breakthrough finally came in the 55th minute. Holly Schlagel won a loose ball and found Haley McWhirter near the top of the VMI box. McWhirter surged into the penalty area with the ball on her right foot and took a low shot across her body that found the bottom left corner of the Keydet goal. It was the first collegiate goal for McWhirter and the first assist for Schlagel, although the pairing did connect for a goal in the opening exhibition at Longwood.
The Pirates put the game away with a pair of goals in quick succession. First, in the 68th minute, Sierra Lowery floated a pass over the VMI defense for Samantha Moxie to run onto. Moxie ran into the penalty area and beat the VMI goalkeeper with a low shot to score her first ECU goal. Then, less than two minutes later, Grace Doran and Moxie played a great give-and-go, with Doran racing in and scoring. It was both the first goal and assist of Moxie's Pirate career while Doran picked up her third career goal against the Keydets, having scored twice in a 3-0 win in 2019.

TAMPA, Fla. – After challenging the North Florida defense all night long, the University of South Florida women's soccer earned a penalty-kick and scored to emerge victorious in a double-overtime game against the North Florida Ospreys.
The Bulls dominated possession but just couldn't find the back of the net for most of the game. USF out shot the Ospreys, 26-2, and led overall possession, 70 percent-30 percent, throughout the game. Sydney Martinez tallied her first shutout of the season in the win.
After regulation had finished, the Ospreys had only tallied two shots, with both being stopped by Martinez, while USF had taken 20 with four going on goal.
With 10 minutes of overtime in the books, USF kept up the pressure going into the final 10 minutes. Sydny Nasello dribbled into the box and around defenders before being fouled to draw the penalty kick. She took the kick herself and drove it into the bottom left corner of the net to seal the 1-0 victory.

DALLAS – Courtney Sebazco scored a pair of goals to lead the SMU women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory Sunday night against Northwestern State.
The senior from Fort Worth, Texas, began the scoring in the 17th minute of the first half. Sebazco was open just outside the 18-yard box when she received a pass from the left side of the field from Wayny Balata. Without hesitation, Sebazco buried the shot in the bottom left corner.
Nearly midway through the second half, the midfielder found herself with the ball in front of the net again. After intercepting a Northwestern State pass, Sebazco dribbled toward the left side of the box and launched it from the edge of the 18-yard box, across the face and into the bottom right corner.
Wayny Balata led the Mustangs with six of 17 shots, including two on goal, but was denied both times. However, her pass led to the opening goal.

HOUSTON – Houston Soccer traveled to Lake Charles, La. where it outscored McNeese 2-1 at Cowgirl Field in extra time to improve 2-0 on the season.
The Cougars entered the second half of the match tied 0-0 with the Cowgirls. Houston answered in the 79th minute with a goal by Anna Reysa, which was assisted by Zionah Browne.
Game regulation concluded with a 1-1 tie leading both teams into golden goal-style extra time. With approximately five minutes remaining in the first extra period, redshirt-freshman Nadia Kamassah put the ball in the net to secure Houston Soccer's first road win of the season.
In addition to two clutch goals for the Cougars, Houston also outshot McNeese 22-3 with 12 of those shots on goal. Houston also increased its all-series record to 7-0 against McNeese with the last win, prior to today, occurring in September 2018.

Toledo struck first in the 50th minute as Ashton Cassel snuck through defenders for a left-footed strike across the top-right corner. The Rockets had held possession for much of those preceding minutes in the half.

Both teams combined for just one in the second overtime. The Bearcats also had five corner kicks, all in regulation, to the Rockets' three.
