SMU’s Costa Highlights Season’s First American Men’s Soccer Weekly Awards

IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s soccer honors, for the week ending Sunday, August 29.
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Gabriel Costa * Sr. * M * SMU
Costa had a dynamic second half in the season-opener for No. 22 SMU against No. 8 Stanford, scoring a pair of goals within 15 seconds to power the Mustangs to a 3-1 upset of the Cardinal in Dallas. Costa headed home his own rebound off a saved penalty kick into the left corner of the net at 77:08 to give SMU a 2-1 lead. No even a half minute later, he broke free at midfield and blasted a long distance shot over the head of the goalkeeper off his line for a phenomenal brace at 77:23. Costa’s four shots were tied for the conference lead in shots per match after week one.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Mariano Fazio * Sr. * D * Tulsa
Fazio and the Tulsa defense was stellar in a pair of week one wins over Creighton (2-1) and Omaha (1-0). The Golden Hurricane back line limited opponents to nine total shots on frame over 180 minutes including the clean sheet victory against Omaha. Fazio notched the first Tulsa goal of the season in the 77th minute against Creighton, depositing an Alvaro Torrijos assist for a 1-0 lead at 76:34.
 
Goalkeeper of the Week
Eoin Gawronski * R-Fr. * GK * Temple
Gawronski turned in an incredible performance in goal for Temple in a scoreless draw at No. 10 Seton Hall, turning aside six shots on frame for the Owls in his 2021 debut on the road. Gawronski made three saves during regulation and then stopped three shots during the first overtime period, including a Seton Hall penalty kick at 96:42, to preserve the Temple result.
 
Rookie of the Week
Kyran Chambron Pinho * Fr. * D * SMU
In his first career start, Chambron Pinho played a significant role on a No. 22 SMU defense that limited No. 8 Stanford to an early goal and only two total shots on frame in a 3-1 win for the Mustangs. He also served the primary assist on the opening SMU goal of the season, slotting a pass from the left flank to Papa Ndoye on the doorstep for a score at 27:26.
 
Weekly Honor Roll
 
Henrique Gallina * Jr. * M * South Florida
Led The American with five points in two starts during a 1-1 week for South Florida; scored two goals, including the match-winner, and added a primary assist in a 4-1 win over Jacksonville
 
Ralph Montero * Fr. * GK * South Florida
Posted a 1-1 record during first college starts against Jacksonville and UNC Wilmington; made one save in a 4-1 win against Jacksonville before stopping two shots in a hard-luck 1-0 defeat in overtime against UNCW
 
Alex Meinhard * So. * F * Tulsa
Conference leader with eight total shot attempts and four shots per match while scoring two match-winning goals for Tulsa over opening weekend; scored the winner at 82:25 in a 2-1 victory against Creighton and found the back of the net at 29:02 in a 1-0 shutout of Omaha
 
Lucca Dourado * So. * F * UCF
Tied for the conference lead with two goals during a 1-1 week for No. 13/14 UCF; found the back of the net twice on three total shots against North Florida, scoring a brace at 33:53 and 61:47 in a 5-0 win
 
Toby McCallum * So. * M * Memphis
Tallied the lone Memphis goal after coming on as a substitute in a 1-1 draw against Dayton; gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead at 35:05 with his first goal at Memphis
