IRVING, Texas – SMU men’s golf alum Bryson DeChambeau played a key role as a member of the victorious United States team at the 43rd Ryder Cup this past weekend at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. The U.S. defeated Europe by a 19-9 final score at the end of the three-day event, the most points scored and the largest team margin of victory in the competition since the 28-point format was introduced in 1979.
DeChambeau, making his second career Ryder Cup start, finished the weekend with a 2-0-1 record and earned a total of 2.5 points. DeChambeau and partner Scottie Scheffler played an even match with World number one Jon Rahm and partner Tyrell Hatton in four-ball action on Friday, securing a half point after finishing the round tied. DeChambeau and Scheffler continued the momentum in Saturday four-ball play with Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland, winning the final four holes to secure a 3&1 win.
In Sunday’s singles play, DeChambeau handed European Ryder Cup stalwart Sergio Garcia his first singles defeat at the event since 2008 with a 3&2 victory. DeChambeau never trailed in the match and led by as much as 3 up at the turn.
