IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly women’s basketball honors, for the week ending Sunday, January 16.
Players of the Week
Tay Sanders * 5th * G * UCF
Sanders was a standout for first-place UCF in a pair of crucial conference victories, averaging 20.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game and a 57.7 percent shooting percentage for the week. Sanders tallied 23 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal in a 62-59 win over Houston on Jan. 11. Sanders then hit 63.6 of shots from the floor (7-of-11) for 18 points with three boards and a pair of steals in a 67-51 rout of No. 24 South Florida on Jan. 16.
Kayla White * Sr. * G * SMU
White exploded for SMU in a two-game conference sweep during the week, averaging 26.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest. White scored a conference season-high 34 points on 11-of-18 shooting (.611) with six rebounds to carry the Mustangs in a 60-49 win against East Carolina on Jan. 13. White added 19 points and five rebounds, including the tying and go-ahead shots in overtime, to defeat Tulane 67-62 on Jan. 15.
Freshman of the Week
Temira Poindexter * Fr. * F * Tulsa
Poindexter registered a first career double-double for Tulsa in a 71-59 win over East Carolina on Jan. 11, tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds (six offensive) for the Golden Hurricane in the victory. Poindexter added three assists, two blocks and two steals to the stat line in the win.
