IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly women’s basketball honors, for the week ending Sunday, January 23.
Player of the Week
Elena Tsineke * So. * G * South Florida
Tsineke was a late-game offensive force for South Florida in a pair of comeback victories last week, averaging 27.5 points per game on 44.7 percent (17-of-38) shooting from the field. Tsineke also hit 17-of-20 (.850) tries from the free-throw line. Tsineke tallied a season-high 30 points, including 19 in the second half, and the go-ahead free throws in the final 15 seconds to help the Bulls erase a late deficit in a 66-63 win over Tulsa on Jan. 19. Tsineke added 25 points, with 23 coming in the second half and overtime, and the ultimate game-winning jumper to key a South Florida 75-67 rally past Temple on Jan. 22.
Freshman of the Week
Aniya Gourdine * Fr. * G * Temple
Gourdine averaged 9.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game for Temple in a 1-1 road trip. Gourdine scored six points and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 56-41 win at East Carolina on Jan. 19. Gourdine shined with 12 points, 10 assists and eight boards for the Owls in a narrow 75-67 overtime loss at South Florida on Jan. 22.
