FIU Adavances to NCAA Third Round with Penalty Kicks

MIAMI, Fla. – The FIU Panthers men’s soccer team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship on Sunday, defeating New Hampshire with penalty kicks after ending overtime at a 2-2 draw. FIU advances on penalty kicks 10-9.
 
FIU (14-4-1) moves on to the third round of the NCAA Championship and will travel to Durham, North Carolina to take on No. 7 seed Duke on Sunday, November 27 at 1 p.m.
 
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead as Philip Hildebrandt and Stephen Afrifa found Rasmus Robinski in the 13th minute to score the go-ahead goal.
 
New Hampshire came back in the second half with a goal in the 64th minute to force it to overtime.
 
Both teams scored a goal in the overtime period with FIU scoring in the 95th minute and New Hampshire scoring the equalizer in the 107th minute.
 
During PK’s, both teams were on target, matching each other’s attempts. With it tied 9-9, New Hampshire missed their attempt before Carlos Schekermann connected on his sudden death attempt to push FIU to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.
