IRVING, Texas – Five American Athletic Conference football players have been named to the 2022 Academic All-America Team as selected by the College Sports Communicators.
Tulane offensive guard Prince Pines led The American's contingent with his selection to the first team. A transfer from Sam Houston State who began his career at Baylor, Pines has started all 13 games for Tulane, earning first team all-conference honors for a team that won the American Athletic Conference Championship and is ranked No. 14 nationally.
A graduate student at Tulane, Pines holds a 4.00 grade-point average as a health and wellness concnetrator. He earned a 4.00 GPA as an undergraduate.
Green Wave offensive guard Kanan Ray was chosen to the second team. A transfer from Colorado, Ray was a key player on the offensive line in Tulane's first seven games of the season. He holds a 4.00 graduate GPA in sport studies after earning a 4.00 undergraduate GPA.
Cincinnati linebacker Wilson Huber was a second-team selection after he registered career highs with 54 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss in 2022. A veteran of 62 games in his career with the Bearcats, Huber holds a 3.92 grade-point average in Cincinnati's MBA program.
Navy safety Eavan Gibbons was a secodn-team choice after he started all 12 games and was fourth on the Midshipmen with 54 tackles to go with 5.0 tackles for loss. Gibbons holds a 3.53 grade-point average as an ocean engineering concentrator.
Tulsa safety Bryson Powers also earned second-team accolades. Powers was Tulsa's second-leading tackler with 99 stops to go with 4.0 tackles for loss and three pass breakups. Powers holds a 4.00 grade-point average in Tulsa's graduate business program.
The five football Academic All-America selections match last year's total for the most in The American’s 10-year history. The Academic All-America team has been presented annually since 1952, when it was established by former SMU sports information director Lester Jordan.
