SMU 64, North Texas 46 – Box Score
DALLAS, Texas – SMU tallied its seventh straight win with a 64-46 victory over North Texas at Moody Coliseum Wednesday. The Mustangs are 8-2 on the season and have the program's longest winning streak since 2013-14.
 
Holding a 28-24 halftime advantage, SMU outscored the Mean Green 25-10 in the third quarter and carrying a 19-point cushion into the final period. The Mustangs knocked down 11 of 20 from the field during the quarter, including 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. They allowed just four field goals by North Texas, including 0 for 5 from long range.
 
In the opening 20 minutes, the Mean Green tallied the first four points, but SMU netted 18 of the final 25, including the last seven to lead 18-11 after one quarter.
Stagnation befell both offenses in the second quarter, with each side mired in long scoring droughts.
 
Ella Brow's layup increased the gap to eight at 28-16, with 6:22 remaining before intermission. The Mustangs failed to score the rest of the way and saw their margin trimmed to seven with 4:22 remaining.
 
A triple at the 46 second mark ended a stretch of three and a half scoreless minutes by North Texas and getting the guest within two possessions, 28-24 at the half.
 
Honored in a pregame ceremony for reaching the 1,000-point plateau, Jasmine Smith facilitated the offense and set a school record with 12 assists.
 
Tulane 103, Troy 100 (2OT) – Box Score
TROY, Ala. – In a wild, high scoring affair Tulane University Women's Basketball outlasted Troy to win 103-100 on the road in double-overtime on Wednesday and improve to 6-3 on the season. The Green Wave shot 83.3 percent from the free throw line in the extra 10 minutes of play to hold off the comeback effort of the Trojans.
 
This is the first time the Green Wave has scored 100 points or more since December 21, 2017, also against Troy. Tulane won that contest 106-75 at home. This also marks the first double-overtime game for the Wave since it defeated TCU in double-overtime 88-78 last season on November 17, 2021.
 
Five players finished with double figures in scoring for Tulane. Marta Galic led the Wave with 21 points including five made threes along with six rebounds. Rachel Hakes followed with 20 points and eight assists. Hakes shot 11-of-12 from the charity stripe and added six rebounds. Dynah Jones and Kahia Warmsley each finished with 18 points in the contest, and both knocked down a pair from downtown. The final double-digit scorer for Tulane was Kyren Whittington who stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, six steals, four rebounds, and four assists.
 
As a team, the Green Wave dished out at least 20 assists for the fourth time this season finishing with 20 against the Trojans. On the defensive end of the floor, Tulane swiped a season-high 16 steals.
 
Hakes and Whittington got the offense rolling for the Green Wave early in the first quarter helping Tulane hold the advantage in the opening minutes. The Wave led by six nearly four minutes into the contest when Warmsley entered the game and provided an immediate spark with seven points in the frame including a three-pointer with 46 second remaining that sent Tulane into the second quarter leading 24-17.
 
The Tulane advantage was slowly chipped away by the response of Troy in the second quarter as the Wave was outscored 10-17 by the Trojans in the first six-plus minutes to bring the score to a tie at 34. Warmsley put the Green Wave back in front with her second three of the contest, but Troy got the final bucket of the half and Tulane hit the locker room trailing 41-44.
 
The Wave flipped the script in the third quarter as the offense and defense were rolling for Tulane to outscore Troy 33-12 in the frame. A 27-2 run over 5:28 in the quarter gave the Green Wave its largest lead at 70-50. Galic and Jones paced the offensive attack for Tulane with 13 and eight points in the frame. As a team, the Wave shot 80 percent from the floor and made seven threes while holding Troy to just 26.3 percent shooting to take a 74-56 advantage into the fourth.
 
Troy did not go down without a fight in the final frame mounting an 18-3 run in the frame to climb within one with 31 seconds to play. Hakes hit one free throw with three seconds remaining, but the Trojans managed to beat the clock and send the game to overtime tied at 85-85.
 
After falling behind 85-89 in the extra period, Tulane used the charity stripe to battle back and take the lead 90-89 with 2:07 on the clock. Hakes and Whittington combined to go 7-8 from the free throw line to account for all the Green Wave's points in overtime. After Hakes put Tulane up 92-89 with nine seconds left, Troy banked in a three to send the game to a second overtime tied at 92.
 
Tulane and the Trojans exchanged leads over the first three and a half minutes of the second overtime until back-to-back transition buckets by Whittington and Jones put the Wave up 101-97 with under a minute to play. Troy cut it to 101-100 with three seconds left, but Hakes put the game away with a pair of free throws to secure the 103-100 win for the Green Wave.
 
Houston 67, UMBC 43 – Box Score
HOUSTON, Texas – Junior Avalon Miller's career-night paired with a well-rounded team performance led the University of Houston women's basketball team to a 67-43 victory over UMBC on Wednesday at Fertitta Center.
 
In the first-ever meeting between both programs, the Cougars (2-7) defended their home court with a dominant team effort to get back in the win column while extending the Retrievers' (2-6) losing streak to three games.
 
Junior Laila Blair led the team in scoring with 13 points paired with two assists and three steals while senior De'Myla Brown finished with 10 points, all scored in the second half with eight in the fourth quarter. Miller was a force on both ends of the court as she secured a career-high eight points while dominating on the glass with six rebounds, all on the offensive end.
 
Blair's 13 points extend her 10-plus point scoring streak to eight games while Brown has produced double-digit scoring performances in two of her last three games. Senior Ca'Leyah Burrell made her season debut, while junior Amari Conn made her Cougar debut.
 
Houston jumped out to an early 10-4 lead powered by six points off three UMBC turnovers. A stellar defensive effort from the Cougars jammed the Retrievers from creating any offense in the early going. After a halt in scoring midway through the first, the Cougars capped off the last 5:18 with an 8-3 run to lead 18-10 at the end of the period.
 
Entering the second quarter, the Cougars carried over momentum to create some distance with a 9-2 run to lead 27-12. Houston continued to apply pressure in both its full and half court presses, forcing 17 first half turnovers and capitalizing with trips to the free throw line and points off turnovers.
 
A Houston 6-2 run ended the first half as the Cougars held a commanding 35-17 lead at halftime. Blair's eight points led the Cougars while junior Kamryn Jones ended a productive first half with six points, five rebounds and two steals.
 
UMBC's quick 8-3 run to start the third quarter was wiped out by a 9-0 Houston run sparked by back-to-back layups by graduate Tatyana Hill to regain the 20-point gap at 46-25. A quiet final four minutes of the period led to the end of three as the Cougars remained up at 48-26.
 
In the fourth quarter, Houston opened the floodgates with a 7-0 run to stretch the lead to 55-26. Both teams exchanged scoring, yet the Cougars maintained the lead as Houston closed out UMBC in dominant fashion for the home victory.
