UCF (RV) 7, No. 12/19 Georgia 6 (8)
An incredible back and forth struggle on opening night ultimately went the way of host UCF, as a Shannon Doherty walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Knights to a 7-6 win over No. 12/19 Georgia during the CFX Classic at the UCF Softball Complex.
UCF raced out to a 5-2 lead after three innings and a 6-4 advantage after four. Georgia tied the game in the top of the fifth frame to tie the game at 6-all. Doherty ripped a 1-0 pitch with one out in the UCF eighth inning over the fence for her first home run of the season and the winning blow for the Knights.
Kama Woodall (1-0) earned the win in her UCF debut with 3.2 innings of no-hit softball in relief.
South Florida (RV) 9, Illinois State 2
An early deficit was ultimately no match for South Florida to kick off the USF-Rawlings Invitational, as the Bulls scored nine runs from the third through fifth innings to defeat Illinois State 9-2 at the USF Softball Stadium.
After Illinois State scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second inning, South Florida responded with four runs in the bottom of the third, three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to flip the script. The Bulls also finished with a 9-3 edge in hits in the win.
Alexis Johns went 3-for-4 with a pair of steals and three runs scored for South Florida, and Josie Foreman, Meghan Sheehan and Megan Pierro each drove in two runs. Georgina Corrick (1-0) scattered two hits in five full innings, walking none and striking out nine for the Bulls.
