Vanderbilt Upends No. 12 Notre Dame; No. 22 Temple, ODU Prevail on Saturday

Vanderbilt and No. 22 Temple remained unbeaten on the 2022 season with impressive wins Saturday, while Old Dominion picked up its first victory with an offensive flurry. 

The Commodores rallied from an early deficit to take a 14-12 win against No. 12 Notre Dame, improving to 2-0, while the Owls built an early lead and held off Saint Joseph's to get to 3-0. Old Dominion put a 20-spot on the board in a 20-11 win against Radford.

No. 7 Florida fell in a top-10 showdown against No. 2 North Carolina as the Gators suffered their first loss of the season.

NO. 22 TEMPLE 15, SAINT JOSEPH'S 11
PHILADELPHIA - Temple topped Saint Joseph's 12-7 on Wednesday night to remain undefeated in 2022. An absolutely dominant early stretch for the Owls gave the squad a 6-0 lead and the Hawks never got closer than three the rest of the way.

"This was a great next step in our season," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "Saint Joseph's is a really fantastic program. They're really well-coached and to come away with a win feels great."
 
Belle Mastropietro was simply marvelous out of the gate. The AAC Preseason Midfielder of the Year scored four goals in the first 3:16 of the game to give Temple a 4-0 lead.

Graduate transfer Quinn Nicolai was an absolute star. The grad transfer from Penn State scored seven goals and scooped three ground balls.

Mastropietro had another masterful game. The midfielder scored five goals in addition to controlling seven draws and passing for an assist.

Annie Carroll made six saves in goal.


OLD DOMINION 20, RADFORD 11
NORFOLK, Va. – Lilly Siskind and Haley O'Connor scored four goals apiece to lead a high-powered Old Dominion lacrosse attack to a 20-11 win over Radford on Saturday afternoon. 

"We had a great win today against a talented Radford team. Our team from the beginning was set on winning this game and staying focused and up the entire 60 minutes," ODU head coach Heather Holt said. "I am very proud of our athletes. It was a total team effort today." 

Siskind had four assists to go along with her four goals for eight points, while Maddie Mullenbach had three goals and two assists. 

ODU jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Caroline Shaefer, Molly May and Corrinne Stratton. Radford cut the lead to 3-2 before Siskind scored three of the next four goals to give the Monarchs a 6-3 lead. Moira Olexa scored back-to-back goals and O'Connor added a tally for a 9-3 ODU lead. Mullenbach and Siskind added goals for the Monarchs, sandwiched around a pair of Radford goals and ODU led 12-5 at halftime. 

ODU pushed the lead to 14-5 with goals from Jeslyn Krebs and O'Connor, but Radford cut the lead to 14-7 with back-to-back goals. The Monarchs stormed back with four-straight goals to invoke the mercy rule at 18-8 and O'Connor added another for a 19-8 ODU advantage. 

The Highlanders scored three-straight to cut into the lead, but Maria Rekus put the exclamation point on the win with a breakaway goal to make the final score 20-11. 

Olexa scored twice and had an assist for ODU, while May had a goal and an assist. 

River Rupert had a hat trick to lead the Highlanders. Olivia Hunter made 10 saves in goal in the loss. 

Jenna Peccia notched 15 saves and earned the win in goal for ODU. 


VANDERBILT 14, NO. 12 NOTRE DAME 12
NASHVILLE - Ellie Hilsabeck scored a career-high four goals, while Paige Gunning made 11 saves to lead Vanderbilt past No. 12 Notre Dame 14-12 Saturday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.

The Commodores improved to 2-0 with their first win against a nationally ranked opponent since a victory against then-No. 24 Colorado early in the 2021 season. Vanderbilt improved to 3-8 all-time against nationally ranked teams and won at home for the ninth time in 10 games.

Vanderbilt overcame an early 4-0 deficit against the Fighting Irish (0-2) and faced a 5-2 deficit late in the first quarter before Maddie Souza put home a feed from Mikela McCauley to make it a two-goal game.

The Commodores scored the first three goals of the second quarter to tie the game at 6-6, but Notre Dame struck with 14 seconds left in the half to take a 7-6 lead into thre break.

Karlie Bucci scored her second goal early in the third quarter to tie it a 7-7, and the Commodores gained their first lead of the day when Gabby Fornia scored on a free position with 10:36 left in the third. 

Vanderbilt used a 4-1 stretch between the thrid and fourth quarters to build an 11-9 lead. Hilsabeck's fourth goal of the game iced it when she gave the Commodores a 14-12 cushion with 1:27 to play.

After spotting the Irish six goals in the first period, Gunning held Notre Dame to six goals over the last 45 minutes to get the win. She made three fourth-quarter stops to preserve the lead for the Commodores.


NO. 2 NORTH CAROLINA 15, NO. 7 FLORIDA 11
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The seventh-ranked Florida lacrosse team put up a valiant effort against No. 2 North Carolina on Saturday afternoon, but eventually fell 15-11 to the Tar Heels.

Sophomore Danielle Pavinelli led the way for Florida, posting a career-high six goals on the day. Emma LoPinto added two of her own, while Emerson Cabrera, Emily Heller and Kelly Schluederberg each tallied a goal for the Gators.

"We played hard against a tough Top-5 opponent today," said Florida head coach Amanda O'Leary. "A lot of credit goes to how resilient our players showed to be after finding themselves down. It is great to face such strong competition early in the season – now we can go learn from this and get ready for Maryland next Saturday."

Pavinelli dished out two assists on the afternoon as well, followed by one apiece from Maggi Hall and Shelton Sawers.

Florida won 13 draw controls in the game, led by a season-best five from Heller and a career-high three from Liz Harrison.  

The Gator defense posted seven caused turnovers on the afternoon, with Becky Browndorf recording a career-high three. Pavinelli added two of her own to round out her day, while Heller and Sawers each notched one apiece.

Browndorf also led the Gators in ground balls, picking up four – tying her career-high. Catherine Flaherty, Maeson Tydings and Sawers each registered two ground balls in the game.

Sarah Reznick posted a season-high seven saves in her 60:00 minutes between the pipes to go along with a ground ball.
