SMU's Second Varsity 8 Earns Boat of the Week

IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winner of the league’s Boat of the Week honor covering the third week of the season.

The Mustangs’ Second Varsity Eight posted the largest margin of any NCAA boat class for SMU against Minnesota over two days, finishing over 20 seconds ahead of the Gophers on Friday, March 25, 6:47.7 to 7:08.6.

SMU completed a 12-race sweep over Minnesota over two days, March 25-26 on White Rock Lake. The Mustangs’ Varsity 8 picked up a win by less than a second on Saturday after winning by three seconds on Friday.
 
UCF picked up four victories over two sessions at the UVA Invite at the Rivanna Reservoir in Charlottesville, Va., on March 26. The Knights earned a win over North Carolina in the Varsity 8 (7:16.7-7:30.3), 2V8, 2V4 and 3V8. In the afternoon session, the Knights battled valiantly against No. 6 Virginia, finishing second in the V8, 2V8, V4 and 2V4.
 
At the Doc Hosea Invitational on Sunday, March 27 in Cherry Hill, N.J., the Tulsa Varsity 8 qualified for the grand final after finishing second in its heat in 6:36.28, while Temple’s Second Varsity 8 also qualified for the grand final with a second place finish in its heat in 6:51.95. The grand finals were not contested due to inclement weather conditions.
 
Sacramento State’s Varsity 8 earned a bronze medal at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday with a third-place finish in the Cal Cup in 6:56.59. The Hornets defeated Oklahoma (7:00.18), UC San Diego, San Diego and MIT in the grand final, and were behind No. 2 Stanford (6:42.82) and Gonzaga (6:50.26).
