Tulane's Groff, UCF's Staine Earn Baseball Weekly Honors

IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the third week of the season.
 
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ethan Groff, R-So., OF, Tulane
Groff had an outstanding week in helping Tulane earn a series win over defending national champion and then-No. 9 Mississippi State by hitting. 647 (11-17) with 10 runs, four doubles, two home runs and eight runs driven in. He had the game-winning walk-off home run in the 10th inning of an 11-10 win on Saturday where the Green Wave had battled back from down 10-2.
 
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Connor Staine, R-So., UCF
Staine threw seven shutout innings and helped put UCF in position to knock off No. 2 Ole Miss, 1-0, in 12 innings on Saturday night. The redshirt sophomore only allowed two hits with one walk and struck out 10 batters.
 
HONOR ROLL
JP Sponseller, R-So., OF, Cincinnati
Sponseller hit .389 (7-17) with seven runs, four home runs with eight runs driven in as the Bearcats went 4-1 with a 3-1 series win over Northwestern and a midweek win over Ohio State. On Saturday, Sponseller hit three home runs in a game, matching the Cincinnati school and American Athletic Conference record for home runs in a single game.
 
Alec Makarewicz, So., OF/INF, East Carolina
Makarewicz helped lead East Carolina to a 4-0 week by batting .438 (7-16), five runs, two doubles, a home run and nine RBI.
 
Austin Baskin, So., INF, Memphis
Baskin hit .529 (9-17) last week with five runs, two doubles, a home run and three runs driven in in a 2-2 week.
 
Jack Jasiak, R-So., P, South Florida
Jasiak threw seven shutout innings with only two hits allowed, one walk and 12 strikeouts in a win over Brown.
 
Payton Tolle, Fr., INF/P, Wichita State
Tolle hit .545 last week, going 6-for-11 with two runs and six runs driven in. The freshman also threw seven innings with one run allowed and four strikeouts in a win over Washington State.
